World of Warships: Submarines go on dive station

Dive, Station, Submarines, Warships, World

All sea captains can finally rejoice after a long wait, because World of Warships will receive the first new class. With German and American submarines, it’s time to dive and hunt for warships.

For over seven years, World of Warships has allowed you to bring out your inner sea dog and engage in tactical maritime battles with other players. During this time, the Free to Play has been constantly expanded and now has an impressive 500 ships from a total of 13 nations. However, these were always tied to the four starting classes: battleships, aircraft carriers, destroyers and cruisers. The recently released update to version 0.11.9 now completes a project that has been running since 2018 and introduces submarines as a fifth class.

With them you naturally move mostly under water, but the developers of Wargaming have thought along and don’t let you submerge indefinitely. “Dive Capacity” varies from ship to ship and determines how long you can remain hidden before you are forced to come back to the surface. The mechanics can therefore be compared to an oxygen supply or a battery. If you are not diving, you watch your enemies through a periscope and attack in the same way, or you reposition yourself over water, after all you are faster here. Thus, the forced breathing pauses are associated with a certain benefit.

The submarines use torpedoes as their main weapon, but they work a little differently than the destroyers. The explosive projectiles are equipped with a target search, but you have to keep the enemy ship in your sights in order to land a hit. Clear visual indicators help with this. Tier 8 and 10 submarines also have alternative torpedoes to choose from that aren’t homing, but potentially deal more damage. As useful items they use the “Hydrophone”, with which they can see the underwater environment more clearly, via “Submarine Surveillance” other submarines become more visible.

Even if the new class sounds very powerful on paper, Wargaming itself calls them “Glass Cannons”, so submarines can’t withstand much. Also, the normal ships now have a few ways to take them down. Dive bombs dropped by destroyers and light cruisers cause more or less damage depending on the distance to the target, heavy cruisers and battleships order air strikes, which naturally take some time to hit the target location. An exception are the aircraft carriers, since you don’t control them directly, they automatically defend themselves with air strikes, so you don’t have to do anything else. It also helps in anti-submarine warfare that the pings of the target-seeking torpedoes reveal their position, and if they are hit they also leave a trail of oil.

There are currently a number of German U-boats on the list, such as the U-69, U-190 and U-2501, as well as American types such as the Cachalot, Salmon and Balao. They can be obtained from weapon packs that you can get in the Armory in exchange for Submarine Tokens. The Japanese I-56 and Soviet S-189, on the other hand, are only available from random bundles at the moment, but will also be permanently available in the Armory with the first updates in 2023.

If you feel like going underground, you can gain your first experience in the company “Wolfsrudel”. As one of seven submarines you have to hunt down a convoy, the PvE mode offers space for ships of levels 6 and 8.
