Helldivers 2 was not well received by players, but the upcoming hero shooter Concord will require PC players to connect their PSN accounts.
Back in May, Sony decided to force Hellraiser 2 PC players to link their PSN accounts to their game. The announcement wasn’t well received, to put it mildly, leading Sony to reverse the decision a few days later. Part of the anger was surely due to the fact that the requirement was introduced months after the game’s release, and even if it should have been there in the first place (it was a requirement at launch but was temporarily removed due to server issues), it seemed like the wrong decision to do so after so many people had played the game so many times. However, it seems PlayStation hasn’t learned any lessons from this, as Firewalk Studios’ upcoming hero shooter Concord will apparently have the same requirement.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Firewalk’s intellectual property director Kim Kreines explained why PC players are required to have a PSN account, saying, “So that we can do cross-play, cross-progression, which is a big part of it.” Lead character designer Jon Weisnewski went on to explain, “Our goal is to bring players together. So in order for PC players and PlayStation 5 players to come together, for cross-play and cross-progression to work, we need a layer, just on a technical level. So our goal is to bring players together and have fun together, and that’s part of the experience.”
This response is a bit odd, since Destiny 2’s developer Bungie is owned by PlayStation, and it has both cross-platform play and progression features, so it’s clear that Concord might be allowing players to play the game without needing a PSN account. On the Destiny 2 side, these features do require you to connect your platform account to your Bungie account, so it’s likely that Concord didn’t want to add the hurdle of creating a whole account system when PSN accounts are already there. Whatever the case, Sony should have done a better job of communicating its reasons for wanting more people to have PSN accounts.
At least, Concord will likely have this requirement at launch, so it’s unlikely to cause much uproar, but it’s clear that PSN on PC is here to stay regardless.
