Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still definitely in development, and Ubisoft recently insisted on following up with some bad news from the company.
Ubisoft doesn’t seem healthy right now, at least not judging by the rate at which it’s canceling games. Last year, it canceled four games, including a Ghost Recon game, and just last week it canceled three more and delayed Skull and Bones numerous times. So you’d think a game notorious for its lengthy development cycle, Beyond Good and Evil 2, would end up on the cutting room floor as well. As it turns out, no, it’s a work in progress though.
In a statement provided to Eurogamer, a Ubisoft spokesperson said, “Development on Beyond Good and Evil 2 is well underway, and the team is working hard to meet its ambitious promise.” Details are a bit lacking, but hey, for those desperate For someone who released this game, you’ll at least be able to hang on longer.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 debuted in 2008 and then largely disappeared from the face of the planet until Ubisoft revisited it in a beautiful CGI trailer in 2017. Since then, some gameplay has been shown, but the game has been mired in multiple controversies.
For one, when Ubisoft hired Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s company HitFilm to let a group of artists work for free, he responded to criticism that paying everyone for their work was “untenable.” To make matters worse, a 2020 report claimed that series creator Michelle Ansell, who was working on a sequel but ultimately left the industry together, may have been abusive in his management style. All in all, the cards don’t support this particular game, so we’ll have to wait and see.
