As always, the monthly NPD report is not just for software. they also discuss hardware sales. In January 2020, Nintendo Switch saw a very common trend going on. NPD analyst Matt Piscatella says that "Nintendo switchch was the best-selling platform in January for unit and dollar sales". There was one key difference, however. switchch sales decreased year after year. However, this decline is not surprising. One year ago, in January 2019, there was a lot of pressure on new Swiss owners entering after the release of Smash Ultimate. This is clearly no longer possible by 2020, nor has it helped to have any significant releases released at Nintendo in January 2020. Things should change in March, with the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
