After several failures, video game adaptations are finally back on track – at least when it comes to TV series. Netflix’s Arcane, HBO’s The Last of Us, and Prime Video’s Fallout have won the hearts of viewers and critics alike.
However, in recent years, films like Uncharted and Mortal Kombat have received very mixed reviews and have been poorly received by fans of the game. It looks like Borderlands will soon be joining the ranks.
The film, directed by Eli Roth, is based on the first-person shooter game series of the same name. The events of the game take place on the desert planet Pandora, where the protagonist must find a mysterious artifact and defeat numerous enemies along the way.
Although the Borderlands games have been critically and popularly acclaimed, the film adaptation has received negative reviews. It is believed that the chaotic production process has greatly affected the film, and as a result, the Borderlands movie is likely to be a flop despite the presence of names such as Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis in the cast.

When will Borderlands be released on VOD?
Lionsgate has yet to reveal when the film will be released digitally. Based on the film’s previous releases, we estimate that it should hit VOD about a month after its theatrical release.
So, Borderlands should be available for rental and purchase. September 9, 2024.
It’s not that far off, but it’s to be expected if the film doesn’t do well in theaters.
Keep in mind that this date has not yet been confirmed – it is just an estimate.
When could Borderlands be released on DVD/Blu-ray?
After the film’s VOD release, Lionsgate usually releases physical copies. However, it’s difficult to predict when this will happen, as previous releases don’t have a set pattern.
The blockbuster John Wick 4 hit stores three weeks after its VOD release. Conversely, the equally successful Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes hit DVD and Blu-ray about two months after its digital release.
In contrast, physical copies of box office flop The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare arrived two and a half months after their release on Prime Video. Oddly enough, Boy Kills World, released in April, is still awaiting its DVD and Blu-ray release.

Borderlands has been widely predicted to be Lionsgate’s next big flop. If the film is a flop, it’s hard to say how the studio will proceed.
Lionsgate could wait the usual time frame and release the film on DVD and Blu-ray about two and a half months after the VOD release. By that estimate, copies of Borderlands would be available around mid-November 2024.
However, the studio could conclude that releasing the disappointing film on DVD and Blu-Ray is not profitable at this time and postpone the release even longer.
When could Borderlands be released on streaming services?
Lionsgate films typically appear on streaming platforms six months after their theatrical release, as do blockbusters John Wick 4 and The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
If Lionsgate wants to keep this rule for Borderlands, the film could appear on Starz in February 2025. The film will later be released on Peacock.
However, if the film performs very poorly at the box office, it could arrive on the platform at another date.
The basic Starz subscription costs $8.99 per month or $74.99 per year with a seven-day free trial. You can get the ad-supported Peacock Premium basic subscription for $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year.
Songbirds & Snakes and John Wick 4 have both been released on Prime Video in the UK, so Borderlands could also be coming to that streaming service around February 2025. An Amazon Prime membership costs £8.99 per month, but new users can get a 30-day free trial.
