In recent years, more and more social media users have decided to include the pronouns they identify with in their profiles. It is especially popular in English and among those whose gender deviates from the binary system.
But it is not only trans or non-binary people who decide to specify which pronouns you should address, but also those who fall under the normative “he” and “she” to standardize the practice and show their solidarity.
Now Instagram has just added an option for its users to display their pronouns next to their username without having to manually include them in the biography box, as they had to do until now.
You will see that it is very easy to add the pronouns to your profile. Of course, keep in mind that for now the option is only available in the US and UK, so we’ll have to wait until it arrives in Europe and Latin America.
How to include pronouns in an Instagram profile
As we said, including your pronouns using the new function will only be a matter of seconds, as Instagram has added a new box on the page to edit your profile, which you will know if you have already changed. your name or biography.
1. On your mobile, open Instagram and go to your profile.
2. Under your name and biography, press the “Edit profile” button.
3. On the new page, you will see the “Pronouns” box.
4. Now add the pronoun (s) you want. You can choose a maximum of 4.
5. Below you will see that you can choose to display the pronouns publicly or only to your followers. If you prefer the second option, just turn on the switch.
6. Once you’ve done that, hit the checkbox at the top to save your changes.
If you access your profile now, they should appear next to your name.
We must point out that we were able to use this option because we are in the UK, a country where it is already available (even with Instagram configured in Spanish). If you are in Europe or Latin America, you must continue to use the unofficial method.
This means going to “Edit Profile” and including the pronouns in the “Presentation” box.
What pronouns are available?
As you might have seen in the previous steps, this is not a box that you can write freely in, but you have to write the pronoun you want to add and choose it if it appears in the results list .
It will only come out if Instagram has included it in its list of pronouns. Far from being a restrictive and discriminatory measure, it is the way to prevent users from taking it seriously and adding anything, which would defeat the inclusive purpose of this function.
In fact, to compile the list of pronouns, Instagram worked with organizations such as GLAAD, The Trevor Project, and PFLAG. The list of all included pronouns has not been made public, but they are all in English.
According to Mashable, there is a minimum of 41 pronouns available:
- what / something
- e / ey / em / eir
- fae / faer
- he / him / his
- she / she / she
- sea / seas
- ne / nir / nirs
- no / ner / ners
- per / pers
- they / theirs
- tuna / tunas
- and / give / screw
- vi / vir
- vehicle / view / xyr
- ze / zie / zir / hir
You can choose between all of these and make the combinations that best match your gender identity. The list could go on and on, especially when Instagram decides to add pronouns in other languages like Spanish.
If your pronoun is not on this list, you can contact Instagram through a form they make available to you. We don’t know what happens when you do, but hopefully they will study the case and add the possibility of seeing it as relevant.
