Qualcomm has announced that its next high-end smartphone chipset will be called the Snapdragon 888, and it is taking a leap forward in performance for AI, mobile games, and the camera suite.
Following on from last year’s Snapdragon 865, the company just announced as part of the event Digital Technology Summit 2020 organized by the company itself, which will be the new high-end processor for mobile phones in 2021.
With no full specification details, what Qualcomm has confirmed so far for the Snapdragon 888 looks impressive, at least on paper.
It features a new AI engine and Hexagon processor that delivers a maximum performance of 26 TOPS (Tera operations per second), a big jump from the 15 TOPS of the Snapdragon 865 model.
It also highlights the new graphics processor with which 35% more computing power is obtained in photography – up to 2.7 megapixels per second – while Qualcomm claims that the 888 includes its most important GPU update. .
As expected, it is 5G compatible and includes the Snapdragon X60 5G modem, announced in February of this year. This should mean that the Snapdragon 888 phones are capable of supporting mmWave and Sub-6 technologies in all supported frequency bands around the world.
Support for 5G with multi-SIM technology and network back-end such as carrier aggregation and dynamic spectrum sharing.
The name chosen is perhaps the most striking. While the company’s most recent chips were called the Snapdragon 865, 855, 845, etc. which led to believe that it would be the 875, Qualcomm ultimately went with the name 888.
It seems Qualcomm intends to evoke luck with its reference to the chip, since the 8 still represents the abundance, richness, and power that each of us has within us to generate positive thoughts and attitudes.
What really matters is that upcoming phones are compatible with the new chipset, and Xiaomi founder Lei Jun was quick to confirm that the Snapdragon 888 will be released with the Xiaomi Mi 11.
Xiaomi is currently the only manufacturer to have been nominated for this new batch of smartphones, although other big ones such as Asus, BlackShark, Lenovo, LG, Meizu, Motorola, Nubia, Realme, OnePlus, Oppo, Sharp, Vivo and ZTE.
