VGC’s report states that the delayed release of the Switch 2 may be due to Nintendo’s desire to prepare “stronger first-party software for the console.”
Nintendo has neither officially announced a successor to the Switch nor specified a possible launch window for the system. But multiple reports have previously announced a 2024 launch.
Company president Shuntaro Furukawa recently told investors that the original Switch will be Nintendo’s “core business” for the upcoming fiscal year, which runs from April 2024 to March 2025. Furukawa has also promised a “smooth transition” to any next-generation platform.
Nintendo’s current-generation console-handheld hybrid continues to sell well despite its age. To date, more than 139 million Switch systems have been sold, making it the second best-selling Nintendo console of all time.
If the Switch 2 is delayed until 2025, Nintendo fans will have to settle for the company’s currently announced lineup. Mario vs Donkey Kong were only published on Friday and will follow Princess Peach: Showtime!, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HDAnd Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Gate. Nintendo has it too Metroid Prime 4 on the release schedule, but there is no release window for the long-awaited sequel.
Polygon has reached out to Nintendo for comment and will update once the company responds.
