Details about Amazon Video’s Fallout series continue to come very slowly, but Bethesda director Todd Howard gave the biggest reveal yet on a podcast on Wednesday: The show does not follow any plot from the games.
Rather than re-imagining something fans have already seen and experienced in Fallout Wasteland, Howard told podcaster Lex Fridman that the series will take on a new story but will be set in the same world as the games.
“When people wanted to make a movie out of this, they wanted to tell the story Fallout 3 or tell the story of failure 4‘ Howard said. “It was like, ‘Let’s do something that’s in the world of Fallout.’ It does not retell the story of a game. It’s basically an area of the map and stuff, Let’s tell a story here that fits the world we’ve built and doesn’t break any of the rules. It can reference things in the games but is not a retelling of the games. It exists in the same world, but it’s its own unique thing, so add it to it.”
While this isn’t a lot of information to go on, it’s the latest and greatest breadcrumb we’ve gotten about the series so far. In terms of previews of the series, Amazon has only released a single teaser image so far.
However, we know a little more about the talent involved. The show is created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the duo behind HBO western world. Nolan is a longtime fan of, according to Howard Fallout 3, which is why he jumped at the opportunity to create this series. We also already know several members of the cast, including Ella Purnell (Yellow jackets), Kyle MacLachlan (twin peaks) and Walton Goggins (Justified).
As for a release date, the Fallout series probably won’t arrive until late 2023 or even 2024.
