Halloween may just be over, but the hearty influx of ominous and spooky content lives on. While Low resolution horror games I’ve seen a resurgence lately, I’ve rounded up a variety of works that are perfect for Halloween and the upcoming cozy season. We start with a game of Color literature, a developer who demonstrated a dark deer exploring a mysterious painted world.
We have dark deer and more in Cool WIP, Polygons weekly summary of eye-catching clips and screenshots of ongoing work. Every week, Polygon staff scour the internet for the most interesting games that are still under construction to bring you a selection of the coolest emerging projects.
This week we also have a Lovecraftian game with a comic book style, a black and white shooter, a game made by the Cottage core boom
A mysterious deer steps into a contested forest
This is an untitled work by artist and game developer Color Fiction. This game is part of The Haunted PS1’s annual Madvent calendar, a collaborative anthology of games. In a clip we see the silhouette of a deer galloping through a light and dead forest. If you’re looking for more moody and atmospheric games, you can follow suit Color Fiction Twitter account where they curate new and previous work.
Encounter comic horrors
The visual style of this game is too terrible to miss. Forgive me father is a recently released first person shooter – or first person cross bearing – game inspired by the novels by HP Lovecraft. Byte Barrel’s developers designed these dark, twisted monsters to look like they were straight out of a comic book. A Clip of the game
The cottage core aesthetic comes to life with this adorable mail delivery game
Not everyone is looking for a horror in the fall, and for these people we have this cute game that we’re inspired by Cottage core trends. In Post time, You play as an adorable deliverer who brings mail to forest animals. Developer Kela van der Deijl has a huge following on TikTok and has posted a video of the main character running and sliding through the woods. Mail time
A creepy black and white shooter
Kingdom of the Dead is another scary shooter that makes this list. Developer Dirigo Games posted a clip showing off his black and white art style as well as a huge, bulbous spider crawling towards the main character. I’m not a spider person, but it has a distinctive art style that caught my eye. According to the developer, it will be ready in early 2022 and you can learn more about the game on their site Twitter account.
A low poly playground with deadly fish
This is the weird part of this series of cozy and scary games. This little 3D platformer, Pain party, combines ragdoll physics with a poisonous swamp. The developer, Icehelm, posted a clip of the character who is absolutely totally destroyed by a huge flying fish. There’s no name or release date for the project, but it is Steam page says the developer will release it “soon”.
