The game didn’t last long for this world, however. Square Enix announced in a January 20 blog post the update would be 2.8 Marvel’s Avengers‘ final patch, with official support for the game ending September 30th. Yes, you can still play both single and multiplayer, although no future updates are coming. But the most exciting news about this stupid announcement is that since it’s officially dying to some extent, pretty much every cosmetic item from the in-game store – from emotes to takedowns to outfits – is being given away for free.
The marketplace has (mostly) been unlocked
Square Enix made the announcement on the game’s Twitter account. saying that the March 31 update 2.8 “unlocks almost all Marketplace items for free”. For people who played Marvel’s Avengers Since launch, and for those who have earned at least one achievement (on Xbox) or trophy (on PlayStation) before April 1st, Square Enix Iron Mans is giving out “Variable Threat Response Battle Suit” as a gift. You’ve seen this suit before. It’s the same one that War Machine wears in all MCU movies. A dark rendition of Tony Stark’s main armor, this suit behaves similarly to Iron Man’s main suit in-game. You may be wondering what this means for Spider-Man. Well, as Square Enix has already made clear, the Webslinger will do that remains PlayStation exclusive. This is crazy, but I think making almost every cosmos free is good consolation for having one of the best Avengers locked on a specific platform. It’s just a pity that hardly anyone jumps in Marvel’s Avengers more. At least you can play it in single player mode. We’ll take those silver linings.
