Rumors have been circulating for months that a certain celebrity is making her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Chloe Zhaos. would give Eternal, and now we know for sure thanks to the movie’s post-credit scenes.
The latest addition to the MCU goes back to Thanos and possibly continues on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Exactly how they play is not certain, but the history of Marvel Comics offers some explanations. Let’s break down this surprising reveal.
[Ed. note: This post contains spoilers for Eternals.]
Is Harry Styles Really Eros in Eternals?
Yes! In what has become the standard practice for Marvel films, Eternal has two bonus post-credits scenes for people who stay in the cinema: a final post-credits scene that brings up an all-new hero coming to the MCU and a mid-credits scene that is the main story of the film just adding a little more.
In the mid-credits scene, Eternals Druig, Thena and Makkari hang around in their ship in space, worried about their compatriots who have been torn from Earth by their angry robot overlord. Suddenly Makkari and Thena sense something and go on alert, just in time to see a new character for the MCU teleportation: Pip the Troll, who seems drunk, happy and ready to act as the hypeman for “the mighty” Star Fox. “
After a lot of enthusiastic verbal excitement, Pip Starfox – alias Eros, alias Thanos’ brother – also teleports onto the ship. The Eternals are ready to attack, but Starfox, played by Harry Styles, reassures them: “We’re here to help! Your friends are in big trouble … and we know where to find them. ”And he’s producing his own version of the little glowing cosmic ball of energy that Ajak and Sersi used to communicate with their heavenly Creator, Arishem, which means that he too is a mouthpiece for a heavenly one.
Who is Starfox in Marvel Comics?
The most important element of Starfox (in Marvel Comics, not the Nintendo franchise of the same name) is his family. Yes, he is Thanos’ brother. Yes, this Thanos. Starfox’s first name is Eros, and it’s an opposite reflection of Thanos in almost every way, a subject that fits in with the intent of writer and artist Jim Starlin to create two characters that embody the semi-joyful concepts of Thanatos and Eros, or death and desire.
In the comics, Eros is a carefree womanizer who lives life in hedonistic excess and takes nothing too seriously, unlike his brother, a devious, manipulative schemer who is literally in love with death.
In the comics, the powers of Starfox flow into his personality – he is an Eternal, the son of an Eternal from Earth and another from Saturn’s moon Titan. This gives him the generally improved physiology of an Eternal: superhuman strength, speed, you know the drill. He can fly, manipulate gravity and matter, and regenerate. But its most notable power is its psychic ability, which enables it to stimulate the pleasure centers of people’s brains, making them aroused, euphoric, or even sedated.
While his superpower is inherently manipulative, Starfox tries his best to be a hero. But his skills have often created friction with teams he was a part of, including the Avengers. His relationship with Thanos also puts him in a position of immediate importance in the Marvel Universe, something the MCU is sure to replicate.
Who is Pip the Troll? (And who does the voice?)
Perhaps even more surprising than Harry Styles as Starfox is Patton Oswalt as the voice of Pip the Troll.
In Marvel Comics, Pip is an unsuspecting alien prince who – you know what, it doesn’t really matter that much. He’s little, he’s snappy, and smokes cigars. Banished from his kingdom, Pip got into a conflict between Adam Warlock and his evil doppelganger Magus and befriended Warlock. It is one of many major cosmic conflicts that Pip ends up in, including Thanos’ quest for the Infinity Gems, in which Pip takes possession of the Space Gem.
Pip’s main superpower, as shown in Eternal, is a holdover from his time with the Space Gem. He can teleport himself and others over long distances and locate everyone, no matter where he is. He also has superhuman strength and can lift 10 tons.
Starfox and Pip’s appearance on the MCU seems to be setting up another Eternals story as they promise to help find the missing Eternal Protagonists. But it’s not ruled out that Pip or Starfox could appear in James Gunn’s upcoming one Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. The second Guardians film ended with a tease from Adam Warlock and Magus, and Pip’s connection with them very likely makes it appear wherever they come up next. Gamora is also an important part of Adam Warlock’s saga, so replacing the version of her that Star-Lord loved has been replaced with a fresh Gamora from a different timeline, possibly a way to reset her to make her better into that plot fits.
Either way, both Pip and Starfox are linked to Thanos, making them an integral part of any possible succession to Thanos’ death (twice!) Avengers: Endgame.
