Even for the biggest party-goer, the siren song of staying indoors is never louder than on New Year’s Eve. Even if you’re going to a party or you’ve picked out a wonderful outfit, there’s a certain appeal to doing nothing and just hanging out. The night starts off beautifully, of course, but New Year’s Eve tends to descend into confusion, both drunk and sober. Because the vacation is amorphous, everyone has their good nights, their bad nights, and the nights when they did absolutely nothing.
Here are some options to at least have a nice New Year’s Eve, no matter where you are.
Miley’s New Years Eve Party
Where to see: NBC or Peacock
When: Starting at 10:00 p.m. ET
What is it: A new tradition could emerge. Last year, Miley and Pete Davidson were able to pull off a Millennial New Year’s TV extravaganza as it could be. They told cheesy jokes, performed funny skits, sang a few songs and just spread a good mood. They were a mess, but they were our
Pete, who has had a very busy year, is absent all the time. But Miley called the Nepo Cavalry and added her godmother, Dolly Parton, to the show instead.
That’s quite a big upgrade, and the show will also feature Latto, Sia, Rae Sremmurd, rock band Liily (?) and singer-songwriter Fletcher (??). The show will also feature some classic NBC synergies SNLis Chloe Fineman and Sarah Sherman. The meeting of Dolly Parton and Sarah Sherman, aka Sarah Squirm from her early days as a funky indie comedian, may very well generate an energy never before documented in the solar system.
New Year’s Eve live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen
Where to see: CNN, CNN Apps or CNNgo
When: Begins at 8:00 p.m. ET
What is it: In the ephemeral world of New Year’s Eve hosting, things usually go smoothly, because how could you screw up a gig like this? You crack jokes, introduce musical guests and when you’re on CNN you drink a lot. For years, for some reason, CNN has chosen New Year’s Eve as its annual chance to push back its credibility as a news organization and just squander it all. Don Lemon got her ear pierced after Downing Tequila Shots! people love it!
Until last year when Bravos Andy Cohen scolded with joy when outgoing New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio vacated his office. “The only thing Democrats and Republicans agree on is what a terrible mayor he was. So, sayonara sucka!” Regardless of how accurately he captured the feeling of New York, it didn’t seem like what CNN normally broadcasts.
That sentiment spilled over to the station’s president, Chris Licht, who ordered his hosts to back off. But not completely like Semafor’s Max Tani did pointed out. The order went back and forth, now allowing Anderson Cooper and Cohen to drink, although Cooper appears to be “concerned at the perception that only the two white hosts are allowed to drink.” So that rule was rescinded, with Licht saying he prefers no on-air drinking at all, which apparently angered Don Lemon.
So come join CNN this New Year’s Eve where no one knows what’s going to happen!
Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest
Where to see: ABC
When: Begins at 8:00 p.m. ET
What is it: The New Year’s Eve TV gig kicked off first with Dick Clark, his Rock New Year’s Eve was the first real challenger to Guy Lombardo’s big band, which had dominated radio and television for decades. Rock is now a juggernaut of its own, a rare living connection to how television worked in the 20th century. Dick Clark has passed away, but Seacrest is holding on to Clark’s vision of a bright, happy new year.
This year’s guests prove it: Usher (from Las Vegas), Kevin Hart, Ellie Goulding, Patti LaBelle, REO Speedwagon, Nick Cannon, Jenifer Lewis, John Stamos, Jack Black and Kyle Gass from Tenacious D, Jean Smart, Cheri Oteri, Ava Max and more! No matter who you are, chances are you like at least someone on this list. It’s guaranteed a good time, at least for the few minutes that your favorite is on the air before Stamos hits him.
In his drunken rants last year, CNN’s Andy Cohen also took a few shots and called Ryan Seacrest Rock
“I’m not advocating drinking when you’re on the air. I don’t know how this started as a tradition, but it’s probably a good idea,” he told USA Today. Seacrest promises not to drink until 1 a.m., so it’s 8 p.m. on ABC
The Shaq-tacular Spectacular
Where to see: Meta Horizon Worlds or Meta Quest TV (on your Meta Quest 2 VR headset)
When: Oculus.com claims the event starts at 6:30 p.m. ET and goes until 3 a.m. How does this work with this seemingly hour-long special? We’re not entirely sure.
What is it: Meta keeps trying to make Meta happen, and in the context of New Year celebrations, “trying to make it” means spending lots and lots of money on celebrities. The recorded event, which lasts just an hour, features Cardi B, Ludacris, Lil Yachty, Killer Mike, Whipped Cream and DJ Diesel (that’s Shaq). There will also be professional roller skaters, cheerleaders, a basketball court and a marching band.
