Technically, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the fifth film in Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse, which expanded into television with Apple TV Plus in 2023. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. While that doesn’t make this franchise as expansive as, say, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s still a work big enough to fill a long weekend of viewing for anyone curious about what led up to it The New Kingdom.

Do I need to watch any MonsterVerse movies before Godzilla x Kong?

The scientific agency monarch still takes the lead in dealing with the Kaiju-sized creatures called Titans. The New Kingdom brings back a few cast members, like Monarch scientist Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall), her adopted (and apparently psychic) daughter Jia (Kaylee Hottle), and conspiracy theorist podcaster Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Henry). Many other characters do not return Godzilla vs. Kong, including Alexander Skarsgård as Dr. Nathan Lind, Millie Bobby Brown as Bernie fan Madison and Kyle Chandler as her father Mark. What’s most important is that Godzilla and King Kong are back and are still willing to work together, even if they don’t like each other.

Is Godzilla x Kong getting a sequel?
That depends on how many people go Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Warner Bros. has not yet approved another MonsterVerse film and clearly has not specifically planned this particular MonsterVerse arc as a trilogy. But Adam Wingard has openly said he is ready to make a third film in this series. He is equally open in saying that it all depends on whether The New Kingdom makes money and Warner Bros. decides to continue the MonsterVerse from that point on.
However, the film itself doesn’t set up any dangling plot threads or cliffhangers – it ends quite neatly and puts all the toys back on the shelf. The Titans are always ready to embark on another brawl, just as they have done since 1955 Godzilla invades again transformed Godzilla from a one-off villain into a franchise anchor. Wingard and Warner Bros. are just waiting to see if audiences want to continue playing with these special action figures.
