BitSummit, Japan’s premier indie games eventwas held in Kyoto over the weekend and among the games presented was one that was named Tokyo stories that has Yes, really caught my attention.
Developed by Drecom, who usually develop mobile games, it’s an atmospheric adventure game set in Tokyo, where cryptically “The city continues to tell its story, even after its disappearance.”
The trailer of the game looks Fantasticwith an art style that builds its world in 3D then everything gives a gritty Pixel art effect before smothering it all in some incredibly moody lighting effects:
Looks great, doesn’t it? By now, you might also be wondering how the game actually plays, since this trailer consisted almost entirely of cinematics. IGN Japan were at BitSummit and after a hands-on demo with Tokyo Stories say it’s built very much like a traditional one PS1 game with a fixed camera perspective in which your 3D character walks around, spending most of your time simply wandering the city streets (you are bound to a walking speed) Explore and learn about the world around you.
This might be a long shot for older heads here but if does anyone remember the 2013 PS3 exclusive Rain
Tokyo Stories is currently planned for PC and “consoles”, with a projected release date for sometime in 2023. If you want to see more about the game, his official Instagram account has some smaller clipsincluding one showing how the game’s unique visual appearance is achieved:
