Larian Studios just can’t handle this Baldur’s Gate 3, It is a successful role-playing game from 2023, but with the entire franchise. And I mean done, as studio founder Swen Vincke said during a talk at the Game Developers Conference (GDC), that the team is abandoning the series.
As reported by IGNVincke said during a GDC talk on March 21 that Larian Studios was not working on an expansion Baldur’s Gate 3 or a follow-up to the Dungeons-inspired role-playing game. Instead, according to Vincke, the studio plans to embark on something completely new. A representative from Larian Studios confirmed this IGN
I told you at the beginning that we are a company with big ideas. We are not a company that specializes in creating DLCs [or] Extensions. We actually tried this a few times and failed every time. That’s not our thing. Life is too short, our ambitions are very big. And so, like Gustav [the codename for BG3, taken from Swen’s dog who recently passed away], Baldur’s Gate will always have a warm place in our hearts. We will forever be proud of it, but we will not continue like this.
We will not make any new expansions, which is what everyone expects from us. We will not make it Baldur’s Gate 4, what each of us expects. We will continue. We will move away from it D&D, and we’ll start doing something new. I’m saying it here because I have a forum and [we’re getting] We are bombarded by people who expect us to do these things, but it’s not for us. It’s up to Wizards of the Coast to find someone to take up the torch because it’s their intellectual property. We believe we have done our job and so it is time for us to get a new puppy.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has been a success for Larian Studios since it left Early Access in August 2023. That’s it reached over 10 million players and won numerous trophies including Game of the Year at the DICE Awards. Given the huge financial success and critical acclaim for their game, one would think that Larian Studios could keep the momentum going. Instead, the studio is all about taking risks and breaking new ground. And honestly, I can respect the hell out of that.
