[Extreme James Bond credits voice] Loki will return.
An after-credits scene in the finale of the first season on Wednesday confirmed this Loki Season 2 will appear on our current timeline in the future. Although the first attempts from Marvel Studios Disney Plus TV shows, WandaVision and The falcon and the winter soldier, both were intended as one-off, film-like adventures for their respective characters – and check out Marvel’s recent triumphs in the Emmys miniseries categories to see why this is a winning strategy – Tom Hiddleston’s Star Vehicle becomes a traditional, ongoing series be.
Rumors about Loki being a multi-season show emerged last July when SHIELD agents Actor Clark Gregg let it slide that the Thor franchise spin-off would run at least 10-12 episodes. Only now is there confirmation that the show has been picked up for more. The end of the first season makes it clear why.
[Ed. note: this post contains spoilers for the finale.]
In the last 40 minutes of Loki Season 1, the main timeline Loki and Sylvie arrive at the Citadel at the end of time to meet “He Who Remains”, the original version of the Marvel character Kang the Conqueror, played in the MCU by Jonathan Majors (Lovecraft land). After a debriefing on how time works, Sylvie Loki steps back to the TVA and “frees” the time. Your choice opens up endless possibilities and sets the timeline back for Loki to meet Mobius and Hunter B-15 for the first time … a second time.
Where does it all go from here? Disney and Marvel haven’t issued an official press release to accompany the season two announcement, but sources say Polygon showrunner Michael Waldron is expected to return and the season is currently occupying the writers’ room. As for the cast, the loose endings suggest Sylvia (Sophia Di Martino), Mobius (Owen Wilson), Hunter B-15 (Wumi Mosaku), and Ravonna (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) are all integral parts of the story Next.
As for Majors’ “He Who Remains”, his next gig may not be Loki Season 2, but another part of the MCU mega franchise. As we learned last September (but has yet to be officially confirmed by Marvel), the actor was cast as Kang in the upcoming 2023 release. Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
It is unclear when Loki Season 2 could be running around, but Marvel has plenty of little adventures planned for the future. The animated anthology will appear next year What if…? in August, Hawk Eye and Mrs. Marvel later in 2021, and You-hulk and Moon knight for 2022.
