Fans have been waiting for information about the upcoming series of Doctor Who. The 2021 San Diego Comic-Con panel on the BBC stand gave us new details on Series 13, including a warning to prepare for cliffhanger. Although no official premiere date has been announced, we have news who comes “later this year,” which is good news.
The biggest reveal comes from showrunner Chris Chibnall, who announced that the series will be a serialized story, with each episode serving as a chapter in a larger picture. “It’s definitely the most ambitious thing we’ve done since taking part in the series,” said Chibnall of the format change.
A row of Doctor Who mostly consists of independent episodes with the occasional two-parter, which are otherwise removed from any major central arc. Showrunner Russel T. Davies played a long game with the master (John Simms), who spread his story in several episodes over several seasons, which culminated in the two-parter “The End of Time”. His successor, Steven Moffat, also tended towards prestige TV mode, building each season around a central theme such as time rifts or the impossible girl, the Eleventh Doctor’s investigation against consort Clara Oswald. But Series 13 will be the first time episodes are really serialized and tell a cohesive story.
Series 13 continues after the Doctor (Jodie Whitaker) and Yaz (Mandip Gill) have been out for some time. The couple will meet Dan Lewis (John Bishop) during one of their adventures. That Doctor Who The New Years episode “Revolution of the Daleks” was the swan song for two of the Thirteenth Doctor’s three original Companions, Ryan (Tosin Cole) and Graham (Bradley Walsh), but in a sting after the episode, Dan was introduced to fans. Little information was given about the new addition – a fact that has not changed after the panel. He will play a central role on the series, but fans still know next to nothing about him.
Chibnall didn’t reveal much about the important decision, but said we could expect more new faces. “We have a number of great guest actors joining us throughout the series, and some of them repeat over multiple episodes, which is very unusual for this show.” One of those characters is Vinder, played by Jacob Anderson aka Raleigh Ritchie, who is probably best known for playing Gray Worm Game of Thrones. Anderson previously worked with Chibnall and Whitaker on Broadchurch
“He makes you fall in love with him, and he breaks your heart … he’s got it all,” says Chibnall of the cast of Anderson.
The cast were notoriously silent about what else to expect, but Anderson betrayed a little by describing his experiences on the set. “Not only did I get to go on the TARDIS… I also have my own ship. My own ship has a world of buttons and levers and switches that you could actually press. ”Bishop also calls him an“ action star, ”which gives us an idea of what to expect from the character. Not to mention this costume.
There were few classic monsters in Chibnall’s era, with the exception of the Daleks, who appeared in both Christmas specials, and the Cybermen. But that seems to be changing. Jodie says she is “excited that our amazing Whovians are seeing some incredible interactions with ancient monsters”.
