In the latest games, players are once again on the hunt for shiny Pokémon, those incredibly rare, incredibly sought-after variants. And during Pokémon brilliant diamond and Shiny pearl just came out today, thanks to leaked early copies and the efforts of the dataminers, we already have a pretty good idea of the shiny rates players will face in the remasters.
Shiny Pokémon have the same exact stats as regular Pokémon. The only difference is how they look and that they are incredibly hard to come by. Your basic chance of encountering a shiny variant when you go into battle is 1 of 4096
That goes for any Pokémon that aren’t shiny-lockedwhich is in Pokémon BDSP even includes the starters. So in theory, you could always reset your game before grabbing your Chimchar, Piplup, or Turtwig in hopes of getting the shiny version. If you’re extremely, extremely lucky, you might even get one without any reset.
For shining post-game hunters, chaining is key. The chances of encountering a Shiny increase the more times you defeat that particular Pokémon in a row. For this you need the Poké radarthat you earn by completing the game’s Pokédex. Poké Radar shakes tall grass that hides the same Pokémon you just fought. The longer the encounter chain with the same Pokémon, the higher the chance that a Shiny will appear.
Here are the Chain tariffs
- 0 matches: 1 of 4096
- 10 encounters: 1 out of 2521
- 20 encounters: 1 of 1820
- 30 encounters: 1 in 1310
- 35 encounters: 1 in 1192
- 36 encounters: 1 out of 993
- 37 encounters: 1 of 799
- 38 encounters: 1 in 400
- 39 encounters: 1 in 200
- 40+ encounters: 1 in 99
The other main way to increase shiny odds is through breeding. Through breeding BDSP Pokémon with those from other regions can increase the chance of a shiny hatch from the resulting egg from 1 in 4096 to 1 in 683 Shiny charm, the odds will increase even higher to 1 in 512. Ditos obviously work best for this route as they can breed with anything.
Pokémon BDSP has another special way to increase the rate: the Great subway. This new series of tunnels has been expanded from the version you explored in the older games and features Digletts and Dugtrios that leave energy packets behind. Gather up to 40 energy points from them and you will get a brilliant encounter rate of 1 in 2048 for several minutes. When the odds against you are that high, it’s nothing.
