What does ankle want? Where does he comes from? What does he represent for Sonic? What does the Master Emerald really mean to him?
When Idris Elba signed up to have a super powerful Red Echidna in. to play Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the actor searched for backstory and identity and found “everything an actor needs to create a character and some kind of craftsmanship,” says director Jeff Fowler. “He was just so eager to take it all in and work him into the best version of the character. Which was great. It was great to see how much he cared to get it right. “
In the first trailer for Sound 2Released this week at The Game Awards, fans got a taste of how Sonic stepped into his familiar hero role, Tails joined the crew as a soaring sidekick, and Knuckles made his first appearance in the 1994s Sonic the Hedgehog 3
“You have Sonic’s speed, you have Knuckles superpower, and we just put them in an environment and let them go,” says Fowler. “It’s like a little Captain America [and] Ironman; it just offers so many options in terms of battle choreography and action. “
And while the movie isn’t the linchpin of some dark, somber mode for adults, Fowler takes a character like Knuckles as seriously as he does a guy like Elba. Knuckles has a motivation – anyone who knows about it the lore behind Master Emerald from Sonic & Knuckles knows where Sound 2 is on the way – and in Fowler’s mind Knuckles’ dynamic with the blue speedster is pretty deep.

“Obviously the type of rivalry between Robotnik and Sonic and their fights have a kind of look and feel,” says the director. “But when you bring along a character like Knuckles who has power and is better suited to combat than Sonic in many ways… When we finished the first movie, Sonic was in a fight. That doesn’t make you a superhero overnight, and you bring along a character like Knuckles, whose entire existence is about honor and being a warrior. And right away, Sonic is not up to this guy. To tease that kind of confrontation like in the trailer, so that the fans realize that we’re starting with where Knuckles is just a force of nature and Sonic is out of his element at first because Knuckles is just more than he can handle – it felt like dramatic material and a great foundation on which to build a film story. “
Heavy. But Fowler, who grew up in the animation and visual effects industry at Blur Studios, says Knuckles also gives him plenty of opportunities to let off steam.
