You may know that the big event of Marvel Comics right now is that the Avengers, X-Men and Eternals accidentally created a god with the power to destroy all life on earth and a mandate to do so , if humanity is not judged favorably enough. “You will be judged individually. You will be judged as a collective,” said the Heavenly Forefather. Last week it arrived for Hawkeye in the form of Black Widow, and this week his roving eye finally met our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
And of course it took the form of Gwen Stacy, his worst failure. So how did the hapless, flawed, eternally struggling Peter Parker fare?
What else is happening on the pages of our favorite comics? We’ll tell you. Welcome to Monday Funnies, Polygon’s weekly list of books our comics editor has enjoyed over the past week. It’s part society pages about the lives of superheroes, part recommended reading, and part look at this cool art. There may be some spoilers. There may not be enough context. But there will be great comics. (And if you missed the last issue, read this.)
The Progenitor not only pardoned Peter, but gave him a gift: one last talk with a temporarily revived Gwen. A few years ago that would have seemed like old hat, but in modern times Gwen is hers internationally known spider-person in film and comics (not to mention her own Deadpool). Peter even knows Spider-Gwen! He looks after her!
It keeps the old-school tragedy of Gwen Stacy alive and meaningful without taking a female character out of mythos, which freed me to enjoy this scene for the comic-book high-drama moment that it is .
The issue also has an awesome button revealing that Gwen’s killer, Norman Osborn – who is currently trying to go straight ahead and not murder all the time – is Also being judged by a much meaner looking Gwen Stacy Progenitor.
Phillip Kennedy Johnsons action comics was ambitious from the start and I’m still not sure if it all paid off. But I can tell you one thing: Riccardo Federici – with colorist Lee Loughridge – draws them hell
As a bisexual who loves puns, I have to reluctantly accept that this one is pretty good, and so the best puns should be accepted.
Not one but two Gotham City characters started living in big boats this week, and who’s done better is a toss. On the one hand, Tim Drake’s boat is getting a cross section, and I love a cross section…
…but on the other hand, followers of the New York Strange News will spot the joke here: Bought Harley the defunct ferry to Staten Island from under Pete Davidson. She deserves it.
