Spider-Man: No way home is finally here, and while the film itself has a lot of surprises and overlaps, it only holds back an additional fan favorite for a post-credits scene.
And just like the recent Marvel Studios films, the film actually contains two Credits Scenes: a mid-credits scene that adds a button to the movie’s story and a post-credits scene that looks more like a preliminary trailer for a new movie in the shared MCU franchise. The promise of both: There is much more history on every trace of the multiverse.
[Ed. note: This story contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home
No way homeThe stars of the mid-credits scene from Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and Venom, shortly after the events of Venom: Let there be carnage. Transported into the MCU by Doctor Strange’s runaway spell, Eddie is sitting in a bar talking to a bartender about all the ferocious superheroes this universe has and how strange that is, especially the big purple one (Thanos, obviously) who likes Gemstones. (Venom, an alien himself, resents the idea, thinking that aliens don’t care about jewelry at all.) While Eddie is still trying to grasp the concept of a world with dozens or even hundreds of superheroes, Venom mocks him all the while, Doctor Strange’s second spell hits and the anti-hero duo is suddenly transported out and presumably back into their own universe.
A little bit of black Venom symbiote gets stuck in the MCU world, however, and the camera slowly pans down and focuses on it before the scene ends. It’s likely that this tiny, sentient, mobile lubricant will eventually provide the Marvel Universe with its own version of Venom, but that doesn’t mean Eddie could never return for another crossover, either.
In particular, this is a very different genesis than Venom originally came to earth in both the comics and the original in 2018 Poison Movie.
It’s confusing, however, that Venom and Eddie Brock were primarily affected by Doctor Strange’s spell. We were told that the parameters of the spell attracted anyone who knew Peter Parker was Spider-Man, but that doesn’t seem to include Brock – at least based on the first two films in the Venom series. It’s possible Venom knew and transported them both, but this mid-credits scene certainly doesn’t explain much.
As for Spider-Man: No way home‘s last post-credits teaser, this time it’s actually a full trailer for Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. The trailer gives us a brief glimpse into the effects of Doctor Strange’s risky spells on No way home, and shows us what Wanda Maximoff has done since Westview and the events of WandaVision, as well as a new look for Baron Mordo. Oh, and there’s a bad Doctor Strange. The wacky movie directed by Sam Raimi (Spider Man) hits theaters on May 6th. So expect the trailer to go live soon.
