Batman has returned to theaters with a new cast of villains, a new case to solve, and a new post-credits scene for the post-Snyderverse era. This time, the Caped Crusader must track down the Riddler and stop his devious conspiracy as crime and corruption swirl around Gotham, with none other than Carmine Falcone and the Penguin behind them. And that doesn’t even cover Catwoman’s place in the whole thing.
But once all the dust has settled on the Riddler’s mysteries, The Batman has one last secret to reveal after the credits roll. But lest we give you too high expectations, this film’s post-credits tag isn’t really much of one scene
But if you want to stick with it, or read up on the scene instead, here’s what to expect and what it means.
[Ed. note: This post contains spoilers for The Batman.]
Most The Batman‘s exciting sequel teases happen during the actual film and uncredited. In that sense, this is more of a pre-Marvel superhero movie. The Penguin gazes at the city he will attempt to overrun, Catwoman leaves Gotham but with a good excuse to return, and the Riddler meets a new friend in his cell at Arkham Asylum.
Instead, a green question mark appears on-screen after the credits roll, similar to what the Riddler used Rataalada website. The Riddler—at least he probably is—types “Good Bye” and then leaves the question mark after the sentence. After that, a little text flashes for a very short moment. And that’s it.
The blinking text is difficult to see in real time, but a recording frozen at the right time shows that it’s just the URL for rataalada. While most moviegoers will assume this is just from the film itself, die-hard fans of The BatmanThe extremely long hype cycle of will know that the site was also part of the film’s augmented reality (ARG) game, which has now been running for well over a year.
The ARG originally combined some real-world elements, including hidden messages in the film’s posters, to eventually reveal the Rataalada website and a sketch of Batman himself hidden behind some mysteries. However, now that the movie is actually out, the site seems to have been updated with new puzzles and a new Easter egg. If you answer the riddles correctly this time, you will receive a video of Thomas Wayne’s campaign ad, re-edited by the Riddler, just like in the movie.
While this may seem like just a nice bit of lore and content to the film’s most dedicated fans and puzzle solvers, it’s entirely possible that the ARG featured in the ad has an additional element in it, but if so, we don’t have it still found it. And more could come in the coming days and weeks. Remember the future of The Batman is not just an inevitable sequel, but two separate TV shows: one focuses on Gotham PD and another on The Penguin.
