It’s early 2022, but one thing is already clear: Wordl has become one of the breakout games of the year. And its success has a five-year-old iOS app called Wordl – which is completely unrelated to the popular word game currently taking over the internet – much to the developer’s surprise, IGN reports.
Steven Cravotta created the Wordl Mobile App Store game when he was 18 “mostly for fun to improve my coding skills and maybe make a quick buck.” he explained in a Twitter thread
The viral browser game Wordl, created by Josh Wardle, allows players six attempts to guess a 5-letter word. It has a simple catch that makes it easy to play and build a daily habit. The game’s popularity earned it coverage in a number of prominent publications, which almost certainly led to people searching the App Store for the game’s name, as Cravotta explained in his Twitter thread.
But there is none Wordl app – at least not from the creator of the browser game. Of course, that hasn’t stopped people from searching for the game on the App Store. Some people have capitalized on this by creating shameless clones that rip this off Wordl
Cravotta’s Wordl app is completely different and was developed independently. Given the app’s popularity, Cravotta reached out to Josh Wardle, and the two decided to donate the proceeds to Thrust! West Oakland, a charity founded in 1997 that provides tutoring and mentoring for students in the area.
