Communities around the world make public distribution, or, in some cases, they are ordered to become a community – all through effort to help stop the spread of COVID-19, a disease caused by the novelos cornavirus. In response, Wizards of the Coast adds magical Friday Night events – usually a weekly ritual Magic: Gathering Players – Magic: The Gathering Field, its new digital version of the game. It's a mission to help players stay connected to their community and to local sports stores. The Wizards of the Coast announced its Friday Night Home program on Friday.
Over the next three weekends (“and probably over,” says the Wizards of Coast) players can meet Magic: The Gathering Field participation. Shops that often have Friday Night Magic events will be able to issue codes to encourage communities to get together – Wizards of Coast said its auctioneers would create online communities when they didn't already have one, either in Discord, Facebook, or WhatsApp.
Here's what you can expect from events, directly from the company:
March 27 – Challenger Decks
- Choose from the four 2020 Challenger Decks that have been redesigned and enter to challenge others.
April 3 – All Access
- Create a desk with any cards in the standard, whether in your collection or not. Play for others, build more desks, and play again. Clean. Repeat.
April 10 – History of the Brawl
- Build a deck of 60 card cards with your standard and historical cards, and war!
The rewards of connecting with your community are "special skills" Magic: The Gathering Field.
"There is so much we are working to connect players to their stores and their communities, and we hope this is a powerful first step towards laying the groundwork for more in the future," the Wizards of Coast news release said. "Local shops, like many other small businesses, will need our help at this time."
Magic: The Gathering Field free-to-play on Windows PC and Mac. In addition to the Friday Night magic at home events, Wizards of Coast also added live events last week.
