A new update for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s revenge, a Tribute Games homage to the Konami TMNT games of yesteryear, adds even more arcade flair thanks to new custom rules for the game’s arcade mode. The developer added virtual DIP switches Shredder’s revengemaking you experience the greedy joy of being an arcade operator trying to squeeze more coins out of kids by making the game hard as hell.
(If you don’t know what a DIP switch is, it’s basically a set of hardware or software modifiers that arcade cabinet owners can customize to make gaming easier, for example by giving players give extra health, or harder by spawning in-game projectiles faster or enemies stronger.)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge also has a bunch of new visual filters that bring CRT-style scanlines and a slightly curved screen option, but also the ability to make the whole game look like a lousy VHS tape playback. This option brings additional visual noise, color distortion, and even a tracking line effect into play (see above). It’s very well done.
Arcade mode’s new custom play options are similarly rich, allowing players to explore Konami’s brand of Ninja Turtles beat-’em-ups with a free play option, tougher Foot Clan ninja enemies (which can now explode on death!) and Mimic old-school Supers that drain health when used.
Tribute Games update for Shredder’s revenge also brings some welcome improvements. Players are now invulnerable to throws. Players hosting online games can now set a maximum number of players for the lobby. And taunts now only fill the first ninja power bar.
