Crypto is an Apex Legends character who never has to worry about being the most chosen Legend in the game, but he might get some changes down the road that will make him and his abilities a little more desirable for a team. Apex Legends Live Balance Associate Designer John Larson hinted at it by saying that the team is “actively working” on the changes for Crypto without making it too authoritarian for enemy teams to take on.
L arson spoke about Crypto during a recent episode of the “Apex Uncut” podcast. He acknowledged that Crypto has a low pick rate, but said that means Respawn Entertainment has to “be careful” when it comes to working at Legend.
Crypto’s presence as a “niche, off-target”, according to Larson, is due in part to how Crypto plays compared to other Legends. While most characters can transition from skill use to combat without a hitch, Crypto has more room in the action because he has to get in and out of h is drone. Combine that with the fact that much of its usefulness comes from spending time inside the drone, which means being completely knocked out, and it makes sense why Larson said Crypto is “too cerebral” for your liking.
Based on those comments, it should come as no surprise that the drone-to-combat sequence is one of the areas that Respawn Entertainment has looked at when considering what changes need to be made for Crypto.
“I think simplifying the kind of flow between Crypto mode and drone mode and maybe distributing that energy in a healthier way so that it is not so binary would be a good way to approach that,” Larson said. “So if we did that, we would have to address the ultimate power type of people who power a Crypto EMP.”
Larson closed his comments on Crypto by saying that the changes for Legend are something the team is “definitely actively working on.” Note that those changes may seem different from what has been discussed on the podcast each time they are released, but Crypto mains and Crypto hopefuls can at least be sure that the Legend will get some attention at some point in the future.
