As the MLB season heats up with teams battling for a playoff berth, we’re taking a little break to celebrate the little things, especially a baseball field tucked away in a cornfield in so-called Iowa. that the Field of Dreams stadium is added to MLB The Show 21 on Tuesday, August 10 in a free content update for all players on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles.
Check out the San Diego Studio Design Journal below for more on the development process!
As the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox enter the diamond this week in the cornfields of Iowa, you too can step onto the pitch with this update and live out your dreams. The San Diego Studio team worked closely with the field architects and the MLB to accurately replicate this one-of-a-kind domain. We didn’t just add this iconic stadium to MLB The Show 21, but we have a whole week of live content dedicated to Field of Dreams.
Rebuilding Iowa’s most famous cornfield for inclusion in MLB The Show 21 was a great opportunity to show what makes this game unique and why we love baseball.
Since Major League Baseball is coming to Iowa in August, we thought, why can’t we? Earlier this year, we received artwork that would help us build a stadium honoring the famous Field of Dreams in rural Iowa. I remember watching the movie with my dad in 1989 thinking how exciting it would be to play here. When the opportunity arose to bring this new stadium next to Iowa’s most famous cornfield, I thought this might be the fans’ only chance to experience this, so we have to. do things.
Recreating the Field of Dreams was no small feat for us, and because of that, we had to be very fluid in our building process. We have started to list all the elements of the stadium that would be unique and representative of this famous site, such as corn for example. We were able to start designing the locations of the lightweight structure, the seating area and the general environment. One of the most technically important things in the stadium is the size of the pitch. This rendering was a good start, but far from the essential information we needed to create the true representation that this stage demands.
We then received the first detailed plan of the stadium, essential for our teams to start production. With the bleachers, while we didn’t have exact dimensions available, our team had been designing stadiums for so long that we thought we had a good idea of what they would realistically look like.
After designing the dimensions of the stadium, we received a first glimpse of the stadium during construction. With reference material in hand, from there it was up to the artists to create the details and bring the stadium to life. As the stadium construction in Iowa was not yet complete, our designers had to research the builder’s previous construction projects to design all the tiny details that would make a realistic stadium interior. Ultimately, our designers sought to create a playable in-game replica that gives Field of Dreams the respect it deserves and that we fans and gamers would be proud of.
We hope you enjoy playing Field of Dreams as much as we did making it. Hit the homers, throw the hitless, and enjoy the glory of corn.
