this was paid by Sony for the purchase of Insomniac Games

On August 19, Sony surprised the entire video game industry with the ** purchase of Insomniac Games, the renowned franchise developer studio like Marvel's Spider-Man, Ratchet & Clank, Resistanfce and Sunset Overdrive. The latter, by the way, exclusive to Xbox One. However, it was unknown what was the amount of money they paid for this acquisition, until today.

Like any other such negotiation in the United States, Sony had to report the transaction to the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission). According to a document

published by the aforementioned body, the Japanese company disbursed $ 229 million. Furthermore, most of that figure was paid in cash.

The purchase of Insomniac Games had a clear objective: strengthen Sony's internal studies ahead of the launch of the PlayStation 5, console that will be available during the last quarter of this year. The company is fully aware that offering a wide catalog of exclusive titles can make a difference when facing its main rival, the Xbox Series X

.

In fact, Microsoft followed the same strategy to strengthen its proposals first party. In 2018, during their conference at E3, the Redmond announced the purchase of 4 renowned studios: Ninja Theory (Hellblade

), Compulsion Games (We Happy Few), Playground Games (Forza Horizon) and Undead Labs (State of decay). Soon after, in 2019, they acquired Obsidian Entertainment (The Outer Worlds) and inXile Entertainment (Wasteland 3).

However, Insomniac Games could be just the beginning from a series of investments by Sony. They made it clear last October that they were open to buying new studios: "We will continue to look for growth investment opportunities that enhance our own content." Throughout 2020 we could have more news about it, just before the PS5 lands on the market.
