Hello friends! We have a lot to celebrate today. Not only are we observing Puyo’s Day (because in Japanese, 2-4 sounds like “Pu-Yo!”), And a brand new update to Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, which we’ll come back to in a moment, but we’re also celebrating the 30e anniversary of the whole Puyo Puyo series!
That’s right, my old comrades like me, Puyo Puyo first came out in the ancient era of 1991. Since then, the series has a rich history of appearing on a wide variety of platforms, including every PlayStation console. Fans may have spotted the series in our other titles, like Yakuza and Judgment, as one of the playable arcade machines.
Over the past two generations of PlayStation, Sega has also brought full games from the Puyo Puyo series to Western audiences via Puyo Puyo Tetris and Puyo Puyo Champions. Then last month we introduced Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players!
It’s been a long journey at this point, and we’re not slowing down. As part of our Puyo Day celebrations, we are proud to announce that the second in our series of free updates after the launch of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is now available!
Today’s update ushers in a variety of new content for players, including four new playable characters – Serilly, Rafisol, Possessed Klug, and Yu & Rei; 3 new background music tracks for players to enjoy while they play, (revisiting some of Puyo Puyo’s past hits); 20 new avatars with which players can customize their in-game profiles; and color vision accessibility settings which include adjustments for color saturation that can be turned on or off at any time. Additionally, the six Challenge Modes that were previously only available offline in single player mode can now also be enjoyed online with up to three of your friends / foes!
Like we did last month, we’d like to provide a brief introduction to each of these new characters I’ve mentioned, as well as what they bring to the table for the game’s Skill Battle mode where you’ll be using Unique character skills and special item cards. to defeat your opponents.
Serilly is a shy mermaid who is kind of a crybaby. She has very effective buff and debuff skills in her arsenal. Although she appears as a playable character in Puyo Puyo Champions, this update marks her debut in the Puyo Puyo Tetris series!
Comes next Rafisol, a mysterious being from an unknown world hiding a hideous power with the ability, among other things, to change the form of the Tetrimino in your possession. Those who may have been following last year know that Rafisol was added as a secret unlockable character in Puyo Puyo Champions just two days before the announcement of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, so it feels especially special.
Yu and Rei are ghostly twins with a frightening degree of knowledge about puns and trivia that have a skill that removes up to 32 pieces of incoming trash, which can prove critical in a pinch. Although Yu appeared in Puyo Pop Fever as a playable character, his twin brother, Rei, makes his first appearance in the West.
Finally we have Possessed Klug, an evil crimson spirit who has taken control of Klug’s body, with a powerful skill that can set up a powerful T-Spin attack. In my opinion, this is a particularly notable addition to the character roster, as this is the first time Possessed Klug has been made playable in a Puyo Puyo game outside of Japan. In addition, it is no longer playable from the Puyo Puyo 20, exclusively Japanese.e Anniversary game, so something tells me that Puyo Puyo fans will be thrilled with this one!
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is available now on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 both physically and on PlayStation Store.
