Guerrilla Games’ Decima engine, which was used to create Horizon Forbidden West, will also be used to create other major Sony titles in the future.
The Decima engine, which was used to create Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequel Horizon Forbidden West, will also power some upcoming PS5 releases. In addition to being praised for their engaging open worlds and rich lore, Horizon games have also been touted by critics and fans as some of the most compelling titles released on their respective platforms. When Horizon Forbidden West was released and the reviews came in, it was seen by m any as a magnificent title, showing just how powerful the Decima engine was.
The Decima engine, which can create entire worlds in the game, was first used by Guerrilla Games, developer of Horizon Forbidden West, when the studio was working on Killzone: Shadow Fall in 2013. Following the release of that title, it was announced that Horizon Zero Dawn was being built with the same engine. An updated version of Decima was then used for the development of Horizon Forbidden West. While Decima has been primarily used by Guerrilla, the studio does not have sole control over the engine, as was recently shown.
In a Famitsu interview with PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst, it was revealed that the Decima engine would be used by “several studios”. Hulst didn’t explain exactly which studios would use the Decima engine to make games, but from a recently leaked document listing upcoming Sony titles, fans already have an idea of a couple of releases that could use the tool.
Hulst mentions that the PC versions actually help PlayStation to invest more into bigger projects
“It allows us to continue to invest–to invest even deeper into their projects.”

First up is the sequel to 2019’s Death Stranding, which is reportedly set to use the Decima engine. This may not come as a surprise to gamers, as it was revealed in 2016 that Hideo Kojima’s original Death Stranding was being built with Decima.
Another upcoming game Decima will use is Firesprite’s Horizon: Call of the Mountain, which is exclusive to PS VR2. Again, this may not come as a surprise to many, as Call of the Mountain is part of the Horizon franchise. However, considering Hulst’s reference to “sharing technology,” this could mean that multiple studios will use Decima in the future.
Players are likely to see the updated version of the Decima engine soon if the rumors about the upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn PS5 remake are true. Much like The Last of Us: Part 1, the idea of a Horizon Zero Dawn remake has proven quite controversial within the gaming community, with many believing it to be an unnecessary recreation of a game that is barely showing its age. .
Horizon Forbidden West is out now for PS4 and PS5.
