Game of Thrones: Here’s what you need to know about Daenerys Targaryen, the failed queen

First Daenerys Targaryen fights for her own independence. She then joins Jon Snow in Westeros to fight the Night King together. When she follows in the footsteps of her father, the “Mad King”, Jon Snow supports her after a short time.

What role does Daenerys play in the GoT spin-off “House of the Dragon”

The spin-off “House of the Dragon” takes place around 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones”. In “Dance of the Dragons” (129 – 131 AD), Rhaenyra fights her brother Aegon II Targaryen for the Iron Throne.

There are many parallels between Daenerys and Rhaenyra. Both come from House Targaryen and want the crown of the seven kingdoms. Daenrys will not appear in the spin-off as she is a teenager when the events of GoT begin.

Daenerys childhood in exile

From an early age, her brother Viserys taught her that the Targaryens had the rightful claim to the throne and that he would do anything to regain power.

Since Viserys needs an army to take the throne, he marries Daenerys to the leader of a great khalasar, Khal Drogo, in Game of Thrones Season 1. Through him she learns the language and customs of the Dothraki and is called Khaleesi by them.

Daenerys is initially a rather shy woman who fears the wild ways of the Dothraki. But she quickly learns to open up to this new culture. Her love for Drogo makes her strong.

Khal Drogo and her unborn son Rhaego die under the influence of a witch. Daenerys is burned at the stake with her late husband. But she survives the fire, and the dragon eggs that Ilyrio gave her hatch in the heat.

From then on, Daenerys sets out to reclaim the throne of Westeros with the help of her dragons. In Game of Thrones Season 2, she seeks shelter in Quarth, but is deceived and can only free herself with the help of her dragons.

She aims to be a just and compassionate queen, but also to show her people the limits. With her cool rationality, her strength and her belief in justice and freedom, she frees three cities from slavery. The Army of the Unsullied can also get them on their side in GoT Season 3 without any problems thanks to their dragons.

Daenerys as a freedom fighter

In Game of Thrones Season 4, Daenerys decides to free Meereen’s slaves next. She would like to gain her first experience of governing a large city there and quickly reaches her limits. The revolution she instigates quickly turns out to be a random vendetta. Daenerys also has to use force to hold down her uncontrollable dragons.

First signs of madness

Over time, Daenerys even loses control of the two chained dragons, while Drogon is nowhere to be found. She uses the power of her dragons as a weapon to intimidate the greatest houses of Mereen. Fleeing an extreme faction of the Sons of Harpies on the back of Drogon, she encounters a horde of Dothraki far from Mereen, who escort her to Vaes Dothrak.

To gain the respect of the rest of the Dothraki, Daenerys burns down the temple of the Dosh Khaleen and steps out of the blazing flames. Back in Mereen, Tyrion Lannister urges them to exercise moderation before they head to Westeros together in Game of Thrones Season 6.

She arrives at Westeros with her closest friends. She occupies her homeland, Drachenstein. From there, she plots with Tyrion to conquer Westeros.

Jon Snow travels to her in Dragonstone to ask for dragonglass to fight the undead. There is a large supply of it under the castle. After lengthy negotiations, Daenerys not only promises the dragon glass, but also her military support against the White Walkers.

Daenerys’ fight against the Night King

In order to win Cersei over to the fight against the undead as well, a squad headed by Jon Snow travels north to capture a revenant. At the last minute, Daenerys has to rush to the rescue with her dragons. During this delicate rescue operation, Viserion, one of their dragons, is slain by the Night King. Now he is part of the Night King’s undead army and brings down the Wall at the end of Game of Thrones Season 7.

Along with Jon, Tyrion, and the captured revenant, she meets up with Cersei in the dragon pit. Cersei pledges her support in the fight against the undead, and Daenerys and Jon travel north contentedly.

Up north, Daenerys and Jon want to announce their new alliance. Jon bent the knee and accepted Daenerys as queen. During their journey home, they become closer and show romantic feelings. They are not yet aware that Daenerys is Jon’s aunt.

Daenerys is not the legitimate heir to the throne

Already at the end of the 7th season of GoT it turns out that Jon Snow is the true heir of Westeros. Jon Snow is the son of Rhaeger Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, who married before her death and thus legitimized their marriage. His real name is Aegon Targaryen III. Will Daenerys be Queen of Westeros?

After defeating the Night King, Daenerys takes on King’s Landing. She attacks King’s Landing with her dragon and completely destroys the city. Fear should secure Daenerys’ reign, as it did in Mereen. But who else does Daenerys want to rule? The north is still thin from the war against the Night King, and most of the people of King’s Landing have killed themselves.

She gives a speech to the Unsullied and the Dothraki, promising them that together they will liberate the whole world. Tyrion then resigns from office. I don’t want more innocent people to die. Daenerys enters the throne room, which looks exactly like her vision. This time she even touches the throne. Jon steps into the throne room and confronts her. She wants to convince him of her new world order. They kiss, but Jon rams a dagger between her ribs. He holds her in his arms until Daenerys’ last dragon, Drogon, joins them. Realizing his mother is dead, the dragon melts down the Iron Throne, grabs the dead Daenerys and flies away with her.
