two minutes and fourteen seconds. The new advance of Super Mario Bros. The film has not needed more to draw us a smile from ear to ear. In the absence of seeing the rest of the story, the message from the Illumination studio has become very clear: we are very fans of Nintendo video games. In iGamesNews we are too, it would be missing more, and that’s why we have gathered you in one place more than a dozen especially interesting details.
The other “Six Kingdoms”
We do not know if it is about technology or magic, but in the Mushroom Kingdom they have a three-dimensional world map that is as spectacular as it is revealing. Moreover, through it we have been shown the different kingdoms in which it is divided the world of super mario bros
From top to bottom, in descending order, we find the Kingdom of Bowser, the Kingdom of Donkey Kong, what remains of the kingdom of the penguins that we saw in the first trailer, a kingdom based on Egypt that could be Sarasaland (where it lives Daisy), the Mushroom Kingdom, and quite possibly Yoshi’s Island.
In addition to Bowser’s palace, we have seen an area inhabited by ghosts in the previous trailer, although we are not clear if it is part of any realm already presented or if it is beyond what is shown on the map.
On the other hand, the distribution of the kingdoms is original and created for the occasion, but seems to be based on Super Mario Bros. 3. Above all, given that -as shown on the map- we will see Bowser’s enormous fortress flying over the skies during his forays in search of the stars.
Power Ups! for all
In the original movie poster we already saw several of the Power-Ups from the Super Mario series. Now, in addition, we have seen them in action. As in the games, all you have to do is touch a fire flower to receive its power.
And the thing does not end there: we have even been able to see Mario Tanooki flying over the skies. Can it also be transformed into a Buddhist statue?
All in all, it is curious that we have not seen either the super mushrooms or the Extra Lives, although we expect that they will end up appearing sooner or later. That Mario uses shells at some point in the film we take directly for granted.
The King of platforms!
In the absence of knowing more about the plot, Super Mario Bros. The Movie will integrate the platform levels as part of the plot.
Perhaps they are being used to prepare Mario for battle or are part of some kind of challenge that he must overcome against Bowser or the Donkey Kong tribe. In either case, the result looks like a true playable level, flag and all.
In fact, practically all the elements of the levels shown in the trailer belong to the classic stages of Super Mario Bros
In any case, small big details that make a big difference.
Mario is a “real world” plumber
It can be said that Mario has dedicated himself to doing a lot and everything in video games. From chef to golfer. Of course, the film takes up the idea that he shares the profession of plumber with Luigi. Not Brooklyn!
In a very fleeting way we are shown scenes in the real world in which the trade of the Mario brothers is detailed, fixing taps and pipes. Being true experts on the subject. Or, at least, Mario: the good old Luigi we only see him carry the toolbox.
The trip of the Mario brothers
If Mario and Luigi belong to the real world, how did they end up in a kingdom with giant mushrooms and talking mushrooms?
We have the answer in the trailer and it does not seem to be very different from that of the classic television series and the 1994 film: the brothers will end up absorbed by a strange current that links to an interdimensional network of pipes. And, at the same time, a system that reminds us of Super Mario Galaxy.
We know that on this trip Mario and Luigi will initially be separated and that the latter will end up surrounded by ghosts, with the toolbox and finally, in front of Bowser himself. With everything, it is likely that he was even luckier than his brother.
¡Donkey Kong y Smash Bros.!
Mario’s debut was in Donkey Kong. In a way, you could almost say that the plumber saga is a spin-off of this one. Precisely for this reason, the apes could not be missing in their animated debut on the big screen.
The first thing we see is a coliseum of Monkeys with a decoration very similar to that of Donkey Kong Country. However, if we look closely, we will see ladders, barrels and ropes just like in the classic arcade game. All a tribute.
Now, the really fun thing here is that Mario and DK don’t compete on agility level, but on brute force in the purest Super Smash Bros. style. Will this fight end with one of the two out of the ring?
Welcome to Mario Kart!
So far we have seen nods to the classic installments of Mario, Donkey Kong and even Super Smash Bros. But if there is a saga that has swept since its debut on SNES, that is Super Mario Kart. Logically, in the film will be very present.
In addition to seeing Mario, Peach, Toad and DK himself with their Mario Kart 8 Deluxe cars, we will see how they drift to gain impulses and even make the same sounds as in the video game. Seeing so much monkey behind it is not ruled out that someone wears a banana skin.
The fun here is that all the racers slide down a Rainbow path, arguably one of the most iconic tracks in the game. Definitely, a much more fun way to cross the islands near the Mushroom kingdom than Bowser’s.
I have been in that castle
The castle of the Mushroom Kingdom is by far one of the most recognizable locations in video games. And that is technically different from one title to another. In Super Mario Bros. they drink from many at once, but it is clear that the biggest influence is that of Super Mario 64 judging by the stained glass windows.
However, even the inhabitants of the Mushroom Kingdom have ties to other deliveries. The Toad in the film seems to be heavily inspired by the intrepid Captain Toad, while Peach shows that he retains what he has learned from his extensive sports gaming career.
No less curious is that when seeing Peach’s Castle from a bird’s eye view in the trailer, six stars are shown, which makes us think that it is a reference to those that Bowser is looking for. It’s more, is the same number of stars as the Star Road from Super Mario World.
Cranky Kong finally gets the respect he deserves
We know that Cranky Kong I was going to have several minutes of footage. Among other things, because it was confirmed that Fred Armisen would lend him his voice. Now we have also seen that he does not return as the monkey with glasses and a cane that must sit in a rocking chair, but that he is the very king of the island on which he lives DK
Something that raises a question: is Peach sitting next to him as a guest or a hostage? Taking into account that it has been said that Cranky was the Donkey Kong of the classic arcade games, we do not rule out anything. Even seeing Pauline show up at some point.
What is more fun is to see that among the public there are Diddy Kong, Funky Kong and a jumpsuit with pants very similar to Lanky Kong’s. All in all, the best tribute is the statue at the entrance through which DK exits: is a 3D version of the original Donkey Kong.
Lots of confirmed enemies!
In the original trailer we saw a few enemies from the classic Mario sagas. Now we’ve seen almost all of them: Goombas, Bullet Bill, Koopas, Bob-ombs, Shy Guys, Piranha Plants, Hammer Brothers.
It is curious that in the shots shown of Bowser’s kingdom there are distributed amplifiers. Taking into account that Jack Black is an inveterate rocker, we do not rule out that he will give the audience some musical number.
Now, not all threats will go to Bowser’s flying fortress: in addition to the Kongs clan, we have seen Cheep Cheeps jump over a huge wooden bridge like in NES Marios. Although not all the creatures that we will meet will be a danger.
Yoshi’s Island
We will not only see Yoshi in the movie, but we will see a lot of them: among the kingdoms shown, an island that seems to be that of our favorite Nintendo dinosaur has been seen, and it is full of friends of all imaginable colors.
The Yoshis are not the only singular species of the kingdom. In addition to the mushrooms, the Kong clan and the koopas, we have been able to see a kingdom dedicated specifically to penguins, which remind us more of those presented in Super mario 64 than to the bumptys of Super mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. What’s more, they even have their own castle.
Anime expressions with the Illumination touch
Mario has a mustache for a very specific reason: to make him look more human, he was given a very distinctive feature. Back then, offering expressiveness was asking too much of some games. Today, the King of Platforms It will be measured face to face with Jim Carrey.
Although the people of Illumination are experts in the field (to them we owe los Minion) the influence of Mario’s animation straddles his own style and various expressions that almost look like something out of an anime, including dripping sweat or tears when emotional.
With everything, it is impossible not to remember when seeing the faces of the good Mario of those initial minutes of super mario 64 in which we could entertain ourselves making faces and deforming the real face of the Nintendero hero.
A fun mini-game for a whole generation that has evolved and taken a tremendous leap in quality with the touch of the Universal animators.
Many doubts in the pipeline and an answer: March 2023
The trailer for Super Mario Bros. The Movie It has left us with great sensations and tons of nods to video games, but also the odd unknown in the air. We know that Bowser wants to get all the stars, that he sees Mario as a great threat and, as far as we know, he has not kidnapped Princess Peach so far. So what’s his plan?
In the absence of an official synopsis, the answer is closer than ever: Super Mario Bros.
