The celebrations of the end of the year are very often an opportunity to share moments with family. The video game occupies an important place there and sometimes even to share it with several between young and old. As well as, Xbox France was interested in the relationship that French video game families have with their children.
These are three main trends emerging from this study in collaboration with the CSA Institute:
Video games bring parents and children together
Playing video games is established in a large part of French households. Almost 87% of families surveyed have a member who plays video games. If we take a closer look, it’s a practice that knows no age, says Julie Guillot of the CSA Institute.
[…] It’s a practice that has very little social characterization: everyone plays.
This practice is not limited to the immediate family setting. In fact, for 51% of them, it extends to friends as well.
The positive effects of video games
More than entertainment, 61% of parents surveyed acknowledge the power of video games to develop new skills. Capacity for strategic planning, perseverance, reflection, memorization, or even concentration.
An opinion even confirmed by specialists such as Vanessa Lalo, psychologist:
Studies show that practicing video games develops much more psychomotor skills, cognitive abilities related to memory, attention and concentration. There is also a more pronounced cultural curiosity among people who play video games. All of this can be reassuring for parents too.
Like any practice, it remains beneficial if it takes place within a defined framework. An opinion shared by 88% of those surveyed, who see the medium as a special hobby that needs special attention.
The tools available for good practice
To ensure a good experience for young and old, there are several tools available. It’s easy to think of child safety systems. These are well known to the parents, up to 70% of the families surveyed. However, their use is not that widespread. Less than every second family uses it, mainly on smartphones. Then comes the PEGI regulation, which is supposed to indicate the titles suitable for each audience. If the name is known, its criteria remain in the dark for two thirds of the parents.
On the Xbox side, adults can also count on the application Xbox Family Settings. This allows parents to make settings that apply directly to the Xbox account, regardless of the network operator. Content limit, screen time or expense management can be configured when a child account is connected to it.
Parents’ interest in their children’s activities and communication, more than the rules, is the cornerstone for the success of a fun and educational experience.
