With the film “Luther: The Fallen Sun” Netflix continues the successful BBC series “Luther”. In the new story, we once again accompany DCI John Luther (Idris Elba), who will do anything to catch a criminal. The film begins where the series left off. The disgraced detective Luther is in prison.
However, when a dangerous serial killer from Luther’s past resurfaces, Luther decides to shorten his sentence by escaping. He wants to quit his job once and for all.
Even if the film can be easily understood by newcomers without any prior knowledge of Luther’s past, a few questions remain at the end of the film. We explain everything to you.
What happens at the end of “Luther: The Fallen Sun”?
In the action-packed finale of “Luther: The Fallen Sun,” Luther finally succeeds in putting the film’s main villains, David Robey, behind bars. DCI Odette Raine learns at the end of the film that Robey kidnapped her daughter. In her desperation she is strongly tempted to leave Luther to the villain. But she changes her mind and instead joins forces with him to confront Robey and save Raine’s daughter.
However, a false corpse of the child lures Raine and Luther into a trap. They are captured by Robey. In exchange for the safety of Raine’s daughter, he wants to get the two to torture each other in the Red Bunker.
However, Luther uses Robey’s plan to escape. A fight ensues in a snowy landscape, resulting in a car accident that allows Robey’s capture. After Robey is arrested, Luther is told he is going back to prison. Ultimately, however, he is released.
Why did Odette Raine join forces with Luther?
The ending of “Luther: The Fallen Sun” sees Raine’s morality tested to save her daughter, Anya. To save her child, Robesy tells the woman to “take care” of Luther. First of all, Raine has clear intentions to pursue this deal. However, her opinion quickly changes and she prefers to work with Luther. This decision comes as a surprise because Raines was actually not on Luther’s side for a long time.
However, the fact that Raise is suddenly working with Luther does not mean that the woman now gets along with our detective. Rather, it’s because Luther Raise rightly points out that if she follows him, she’s just one of Robey’s pawns.
Although Raine doesn’t want to work with Luther and still doesn’t like him, he is the lesser of two evils. Working with Luther also gives her the highest probability of saving her daughter.
Robey and Georgette’s story explained
In “Luther: The Fallen Sun” we see Robey visit a woman who seems to be plagued by a lot of trauma. Both seem to have some kind of relationship with each other, but this initially remains unclear. However, Raine’s computer screen reveals the truth. Robey and Georgette are married. However, Georgette wanted to leave her husband in order to free herself from his deeds.
In revenge, Robey wanted to kill his wife in a house fire. In a similar way as he wanted to get rid of his victims at the beginning of the film. Even though Robey couldn’t kill Georgette, he says she died. With this heartbreaking story he wants to get closer to his victims and their families.
So Robey built the Red Bunker
At the end of the film, it is revealed that Robey kidnaps people in order to torture and kill them in a live stream. Meanwhile, his viewers can vote on who should die. Robey’s plan is inspired by the urban legend of the red room. For this reason, Robey also calls his live stream the Red Bunker.
Robey is a sadist who loves getting validation for his actions. The Red Bunker gives the villain a sense of power. This makes him feel superior when blackmailing others for their secrets. But that is also the reason why he could not defeat Luther.
What is Robey’s motive
In “Luther: The Fallen Sun,” Robey blackmails people with their darkest secrets. Even if there is no explicit moment in the film in which he clearly reveals his motives, Luther still manages to get to the bottom of the villain. It’s the way Robey responds to Luther’s taunts that betrays him.
Ultimately, the reason Robey targets people who are ashamed of their dark secrets is because they remind him of himself. Luther points out to Robey that aside from his crimes, he’s just a scared, pathetic man. This is the true motive behind his actions.
Because Robey is ashamed of who he is, he targeted people who are similar to him. It’s a kind of self-punishment to stay in control.
That’s why Luther didn’t have to go back to prison
After the events of “Luther: The Fallen Sun”, Luther, contrary to all expectations, finds himself not in prison but in a house. Shortly thereafter, government officials visit the house. They congratulate Luther on his good work. They then ask him to get in a car and drive away.
While it is not entirely clear why Luther is not returned to prison, it is reasonable to assume that his actions in the Robey case resulted in Luther being forgiven for his crimes. During the “visit” by the officials, Schenk suspected that they wanted to reinstate Luther.
His skills outweigh his crimes, which is why Luther is an important tool. Whether or not Luther actually got a new job after the end of the film is not entirely clear. However, that would leave enough leeway to have more adventures with Luther.
