So the big news is that the hilarious pirate adventure everyone’s been talking about is Return to Monkey Island, is now available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows and with Game Pass! I know you want to jump right in and play it, but before you do, here are some important things I think you should keep in mind:
1. The anchors are a lie
One of the characters in the game will tell you a lot of random facts about anchors. I want to assure you that these facts are not necessary for either the gameplay or the story. They never show up again. you can forget her Also, in case you don’t forget them, I want to make sure you understand that the “facts” are made up. The character in question isn’t a willful liar, but she is a confident person who isn’t very good at investigating. Please do not use Return to Monkey Island as a factual source for your Wikipedia article on anchors. It’s probably best not to use the game as a factual source, period.
2. The Pisces are not a lie
As I don’t want you to lose any cash bets I have to let you know that contrary to the anchor facts the fish is sold in the fish shop Return to Monkey Island are all meticulously researched, real fish. Hagfish, Toadfish, Slimehead, Bloater, and Rags are things that exist in the outside world, unlikely as it may seem. We may have taken some liberties with their ability to move and survive out of water.
3. Avocado soda is both fictional and real, and it’s not our fault
Avocado soda is something we invented for the game, but a quick internet search will uncover many examples of it in the real world as well. We are not affiliated with any of these products, we disclaim all responsibility for their existence and we make no claims or representations about what will or will not happen to you if you drink them.
4. There are no monkeys on Monkey Island
Okay, there’s a great big stone monkey head. But that’s the only thing. This is a game about pirates, not monkeys. If you really need monkeys, we can recommend one of the many good zoo simulators currently on the market.
5. Kids named Guybrush are teased at school
After playing this game you might be tempted to name your next child after the powerful pirate Guybrush Threepwood. Of course, you are free to do whatever you want, but let me remind you that elementary school can be difficult for children with unusual or suggestive names like Guybrush, LeChuck, Grossman, or John. Maybe you want to change your own name instead or get a nice tattoo?
6. It’s good to try new things
This is a game that encourages curiosity, not one that punishes it. So don’t worry, try things even if they don’t seem to help you or you could get arrested, hurt or killed. Um…we realize I’m only talking about things you do within the game, right? Breaking people out of prison is usually a bad idea in real life.
7. The game has a writer’s cut
Return to Monkey Island features a Writer’s Cut mode that can be toggled on and off alongside the many other options. The Writer’s Cut restores additional lines of dialogue that were removed from the game, maybe a few hundred of them. Bonus! But the game already contains a large number of words, certainly enough for most people. I’m the person who did much of both the writing and editing, and I can tell you that those extra words have been removed for good reason. But some of them are funny so we provided option to reset them. You can deactivate the option again at any time.
8. Enjoy it
You can always speed up the game, but I don’t recommend approaching your first playthrough this way. Take your time. poking around. Bring some snacks and a friend. Trust me on that.
Alright, that’s it, now you’re ready! Go play!
