Continuing our preview of what’s coming in 2022, we take a look at the next iOS update. Assuming that doesn’t break tradition, expect iOS 16 to be showcased alongside iPadOS 16, watchOS 9, and the new macOS at WWDC in June 2022, then released to the public afterward. several beta versions in September 2022.
For 18 years, Apple has held its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June (sometimes at the beginning of the month, sometimes at the end). Even the pandemic hasn’t changed the schedule too much, so we can be sure that iOS 16 will be released in June 2022.
Today, little is known about iOS 16. However, this does not mean that there are already rumors and concept images circulating on the Internet, that we can make a wish list of the functions we want to see and that we speculate on what awaits us in 2022.
Compatibility
Before getting into speculation, we can offer some pretty specific information. During its WWDC in 2021, Apple surprised with an iOS 15 that can be installed on very old models, such as the iPhone 6S (2015) or the first generation SE (2016). With that in mind, which devices will be compatible with iOS 16?
The iPhone 6S and SE from 2016 are unlikely to be on the list again in 2022. But we believe that all devices from iPhone 7 upwards will be compatible with iOS 16. exploitation is not compatible with a specific device, but with the chip it carries.
The iPhone 6S has an A9 chip, which was last used by Apple in 2017 in the 5th generation iPad and 1st generation iPad Pro.
The iPhone 7 is expected to stay on the list by having an A10 chip, which Apple has included in new products through 2019, so we don’t think the company will stop supporting it anytime soon.
New design for iOS 16
Apple offered a major overhaul with iOS 14 in 2020 thanks to the addition of the widgets on the start screen, some of which are so large that they can replace up to 12 applications.
However, not much has happened to the app icons themselves so far. Maybe Apple could change that this year. And why not, a design inspired by macOS Big Sur and Monterey like this:

As there were not too many visual changes in iOS 15, iOS 16 may feature a redesign.
New features in iOS 16
While the visual changes are usually the first to be noticed, the most exciting changes are obviously the new features. There aren’t many credible leaks and reports yet, but there are users who are missing certain features.
what about the widgets interactive? As useful as it is to have widgets on the iPhone home screen, it would be even more useful to be able to perform certain functions directly on it. For example, you can play, pause or change songs using the widget without having to enter the Apple Music app.
What if the iPhone finally had the always-on display feature that users have been asking for? Will users have the ability to display information on their always-on screens so they can see it at a glance? Will there be an always-on display that shows more than the time?
What won’t come with iOS 16
iOS 14 gave iPhone users the chance to give their iPhone a new look for the first time with widgets available without having to jailbreak.
Users were also given the option to add shortcuts to their home screen, created with the Shortcuts app and which they could give names and their own app icons.
With these changes, users were finally able to truly personalize their iPhones in ways they couldn’t before.
However, iPhone owners still lack the freedom that Android users have. If you’re hoping that will change, you’ll be disappointed, unless Apple changes its entire philosophy.
For now, we only know one thing about iOS 16: Apple has a big surprise in store for us and we won’t know much about it until the next operating system arrives during its official presentation in June. .
