The technology and automotive industries are more united than ever, and the barrier between the two is crumbling. Xiaomi’s car is a good example of what happens when a tech company decides to take the plunge, but what happens when it happens the other way around, i.e. a car manufacturer starts selling cell phones?
We now know that with the launch of new Polestar phonea mobile that was presented with the renewal of the Polestar 4, one of the most talked about electric SUVs of last year and which finally arrived in Europe during this month of April.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the Polestar Phone will arrive with the Polestar 4 in Europe; At least, the company didn’t specify it. What is clear is that this is perhaps one of the most interesting promotions in the Chinese market, and that is saying something considering how competitive it is.
Polestar’s mobile
The Polestar Phone is a mobile phone designed specifically for drivers of the brand’s cars; and this results not only in an exclusive design, but also in a Android-based customization layer and exclusive appswhich will only work if we are in a Polestar car.
Specifically, the Polestar Phone is based on the Polestar Phone operating system, a system that is very similar in design to the touchscreen system in Polestar cars. The interface is very minimalistwith flat color icons and widgets on the home screen for functions such as media player or clock.
What’s interesting is that the Polestar Phone can be connected to the car’s screen, and display the screen including the applications we have installed in a triple view that extends the mobile home screen.
Therefore, on paper it should have greater potential than Android Auto, since we could basically use your phone directly on the car screen. This system would therefore go beyond the simple display of an interface adapted to the touch screen, and would potentially allow us to use all the applications that we have installed; although Polestar has not confirmed whether it will impose limitations to avoid distractions. Additionally, the Polestar Phone supports UWB, which will allow it to become a car key with a future update.
It’s no secret that Polestar didn’t create this mobile from scratch. In reality, This is a modified Meizu 21 Pro, thanks to the fact that Meizu and Polestar belong to the same parent company, Geely; Therefore, in terms of “hardware”, it is no surprise, with the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor accompanied by 16 GB of RAM and a 6.79 inch screen with a maximum brightness of 1,850 nits . It has a triple camera system, with a 50 MP main camera with OIS, a 13 MP wide-angle and a 10 MP telephoto lens with 3x zoom. It supports 80W fast charging and 50W wireless charging for its 5,050mAh battery.
Remember that Meizu was the manufacturer that announced that it was going to stop making smartphones and that it was going to focus on artificial intelligence. And therefore, the Polestar Phone has many AI functions such as image generationan AI search using the camera and a virtual assistant with a dedicated button.
The biggest changes to the Polestar Phone compared to the Meizu 21 Pro are in the design, which has “Scandinavian inspiration” according to the company (Polestar was born as a Volvo brand before becoming independent from the Swedish company). The simplicity and minimalism of the interface is also noticeable in the white color design characteristic of the latest Polestar models.
The Polestar Phone is available in China at a price of 7,388 yuan, or only 953 dollars, a very attractive price for its price; although it is obviously a mobile phone aimed at Polestar drivers. Actually, The Polestar Phone will be a gift for Polestar 4 buyers in China, and current drivers of the brand will have to use the Polestar app to purchase it.
