Until the end of the last century, photography was something reserved for important events. you had to be clear about what you were going to photograph, then develop the photos, save them in albums… Since the early years of the last decade photography has become extremely popular due to the inclusion of cameras in mobile phones. Even before the iPhone, there were cell phones that could take pictures, but it took time for them to be able to faithfully capture the moments. Currently, even mid-range cell phones take very good pictures, especially in good light.
And the best time to be able to extract that is summer, which is the time of year with more daylight hours, when you have more free time, when you travel the most, and when you go out the most with your friends and your family. Besides, the versatility of smartphones is now greater than everwith various objectives that allow us to approach or move away from the object in question without penalizing the quality.
The advice collected in this article is not going to focus on compressing camera apps of specific models, or tips for using filters or edits, but on photo ideas to take advantage of the time of year we are, summer
Summer photo tips
bright colors. The latitude of our country makes the light in summer harsher, but this also results in very bright colors, in particular the blue of the sky or the sea, the green of the mountains… These tones can be captured and highlighted in the Photographs. You can look for contrasts between complementary colors, such as the blue of the sky and the orange of the sunset, or the green of the vegetation and the yellow of the sand.
enjoy the golden hour. One of the best times of day to take photos is during golden hour, when the sun is setting and the light is warmer and more subtle. The best thing about summer is that this time is quite late in the day and you’re probably off already if you’re not on vacation. Taking pictures at this time softens the contours of faces and gives a look
play with water. In Europe, summer is synonymous with the beach and, failing that, with a swimming pool. Water gives a lot of play when it comes to taking pictures, whether because of the reflections we can get, because of places such as rivers, beaches, pools or waterfalls and even because the possibility of taking pictures under water.
Many mobiles are water resistant, but that doesn’t mean we can submerge them, although we’ve occasionally seen ads that urge you to do so. What we can do is buy a case that works just for that, being able to take pictures underwater without endangering the smartphone.
Photograph the normal part of the day. What is always obvious is that photography is not only useful for those unique moments. We can photograph the trips and excursions we take, but also that normal Sunday after-meal with the family, the moment when the nephew plays with the garden hose or the moment when the dog destroys a sand sculpture on the beach. This is particularly suitable for younger people, who are entering the world of photography.
seek the shade. Although on many occasions this is not possible or even desirable, most of the time it is better to seek shade to take a picture than the sun. This will reduce the harshness of its lines, especially in the case of portraits, in addition to conveying greater depth with shadows.
photo sequences. Something that isn’t usually done a lot is to take multiple photos of the same moment. The idea is to create a micro story with three or four photographs, which tell part of a summer day. An example would be photographing a lunch with shots at the beginning, during and at the end, in a relaxed way. Another example is whoever runs this section, with cats that appeared by chance while refueling at a gas station.
The telephoto lens is awesome. In the case that we take photos in places where we travel, it can be good to have an optical zoom on the mobile, perfect for taking details of the architecture or the nature of the environment, without having to too close to one place. In the event that our mobile does not have an optical zoom, we can use digital, always ensuring that the details do not fall too much.
star photography. Summer is the best time to take photos of the stars and for this we will take advantage of the new astrophotography functions that many modern mobiles have, especially the most high-end ones. This is particularly useful in environments with little light pollution, such as the countryside or sparsely populated cities.
