Game News 20 years after the release of this legendary Nintendo console, this French video game pays tribute to its role-playing games: we played the demo and you should do the same!
Six years after the last title, the Deneos Games studio is back and determined to continue its homage to Nintendo’s portable consoles. It is now time for the sequel to the Save me Mr Tako game to see the light of day. Although the goal has already been achieved, the teams are doing everything they can to make your mouth water and create the best homage to the GBA games. For our part, we have tried the Steam demo and will tell you about it!
Do you miss the Game Boy Advance? If it makes you feel any better, you’re not the only one! At the Deneos Games studio, independent developer Christophe Galati and the members of his team are nostalgic for this era that is so dear to gamers. It must be said that we too grew up playing role-playing games on this legendary Nintendo console and often think back to titles like… Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Golden Sun, Sword of Mana, Fire signs, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance and many others. Consequently, the simple fact of reviving this nostalgia has become the leitmotif of Christophe and the members of Deneos Games. After attacking the Game Boy with the title Mr. Tako saved methey come back with The Last Suppera tribute to the GBA highlighted by a crowdfunding campaign that quickly found its audience, as the project reached the minimum required for its implementation within three days
Tako no Himitsu, the game we would have loved to discover during the GBA era
Of course, when we present ourselves as the heir to the great RPGs of the Game Boy Advance, we are forced to follow a nice little gallery of characters, and this is indeed the case when we start the journey in Clive’s shoes , We will discover the journey of five more characters (Karan, Mylene, Jeanne, Valance, Buuto), each with their own story and peculiarities, both personal and gameplay. Just like in any good JRPG, the balance of the environment hangs by a thread, and by entering a strange cave, Clive will, in a way, put his feet in the problem and pull the thread out of a real ball of wool, wrapped in a dark conspiracy. The trigger is the discovery of an adorable little octopus that will be of great use to you throughout the adventureespecially because it has magical powers that you must use in battles and skills that can have an impact on the environment. When you dive into this thriving era of role-playing games on portable consoles, you won’t be too disorientated.
The Last Supper has all the makings of a hybrid game based on its influences. From the beginning we have the impression that we are standing in front of a Golden Sun which negated its turn-based aspect to fully embrace the action RPG side. We might as well say it right away, at least after what we have seen: The Last Supper is not as big as the current frontrunners of the genre. Calmer, almost childlike due to its aesthetics, The title Deneos mainly plays with the complementarity of its cast to vary the gameplay. In this case, no character plays in the same way and you have to take turns facing certain types of enemies. Not only can you rely on your little octopus to help you on your journey, but Your characters can level up and change their equipment to become stronger
A successor to Golden Sun with very current themes
As we told you, A demo version is available on Steam. After launching, you can discover two small parts of the game, one in the role of Clive and the other in the role of Mylene and Buuto. To say it right away: With the introduction of the part dedicated to Clive we show very clearly the influence of Golden Sun. Even in the course of this prologue we find the narrative sources of the game Camelot: a small peaceful town (albeit terribly boring, according to Clive), a fun encounter with enigmatic characters, a hero who defies the forbidden bypassing of an NPC to go to a secret place, a cave that hides some kind of mysterious temple and a strange creature reminiscent of the famous genies. In one way, The Last Supper is a small candy whose sweet taste is appreciated and whose sweetness gives way to a small and slight sourness typical of sour candy. What we mean by this comparison is that Deneos’ game, while heartwarming, falls far too short of its obvious similarities. That being said, perhaps the overall experience will offer more authenticity over time, and we hope the game will be appreciated for what it is, not what it tries to be.
That would actually be a good thing, as there are undeniable qualities here The Last Supper. After completing both sections, We appreciated these small hybridization ideassuch as this management system for our little octopuses, which we take care of by trying to make them happy and feed them properly (using one of the two types of gems we collect; the other serves as currency), a variation of what was found in the Sonic Adventure. Or even in this way, where you have to use the skills of the different heroes (teams of three in which you control one hero each) wisely to solve the puzzles and progress in exploration. Besides, The game from Deneos Studio proved it to usin these few minutes – plan about 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete the demo –, that the taste of times gone by could coexist with a much more contemporary setting and elementsIn fact, behind this fantastic site lie intrigues that accompany very current themes such as personal trauma, sexuality, the dangers to the environment, the excesses of religious fanaticism, the loss of a loved one… full of small references and replicas (sometimes political) that hit the mark and reflect the population’s disinterest in certain topics.
Within 90 minutes The Last Supper showed us that it had the potential to take us back to our childhood. In a handful of GBA RPGs we find the best of what we liked, as well as a careful and enchanting artistic directionWe can’t wait to see the extent to which The Last Supper will manage to hold its own – and eradicate the few small inaccuracies that we have had the pleasure of experiencing – but there is something to crack. It is a pity that we cannot discover it this summer, because it would have been Proust’s little madeleine that we would have loved to bite into between two swims or summer activities. Let us be patient, but we will certainly be moved to discover it all in 2026 on the PC and especially on the Switch (And, like back then, mobile, of course!).
