Blizzard responded to the negative feedback and, among other things, rebuilt the entire loot system with the start of Season 4. That seems to have struck a chord with the players.
After a good start in June 2023, Diablo IV turned out to be a permanent construction site. The first season flopped, the second received some goodwill, the third not so much. At least Blizzard took the players’ feedback to heart and made major changes. With the start of Season 4 a few days ago, a huge update came along that basically threw the entire loot and item system overboard.
If you look at the player numbers, Blizzard seems to have hit the nail on the head. Assuming that Steam is representative, even though most PC players certainly purchased their game via Battle.Net, the number of players has increased significantly.
While Diablo IV has been languishing with well under 10,000 simultaneous players for the past few months, the picture now looks very different. Since the release of the update and the start of the season, the numbers have more than tripled, meaning there are now up to 30,000 players playing simultaneously via Steam.
Although there are no figures available for other platforms such as Battle.Net, Playstation or Xbox, the Steam figures are a clear indication that Blizzard is bringing many fans back on board with the update. User feedback for Season 4 is also largely positive.
It says, among other things: “Four seasons and a fundamental overhaul of the loot later, Diablo IV is out of early access and is actually really good.” Among other things, it is praised that the item system is now much clearer and works better with the classes and their skills. This makes the characters feel significantly stronger, which seems to boost motivation quite a bit. Some of the Quality of Life revisions were also very well received.
We can only hope that Blizzard doesn’t ruin the game’s renaissance again with ill-advised balancing patches.
