Until recently, the gaming industry felt a bit chaotic. We’ve seen countless acquisitions: Microsoft bought ActiBlizz, Sony bought Valkyrie Entertainment, Quantic Dream was recently acquired by NetEase Games, and the list goes on.
However, acquisitions are not limited to the likes of developers and publishers, the host of various fan wiki pages – Fandom – has acquired Giant Bomb, GameSpot, MetaCritic, GameFAQs, Comic Vine, Cord Cutters News and TV Guide.
Fandom is something most of us are familiar with. Well, when you search for that character on the Ring of Thrones show everyone’s been talking about, there’s a good chance you’ll land on a Fandom page. Literally, it now appears that Fandom is approaching pop culture media with open arms and open arms.
While it’s true that Fandom has acquired companies like Focus Multimedia and Fanatical in the last year, I’m not sure anyone expected Fandom to make acquisitions like it does today.
Through our friends at GamesIndustry.biz, Fandom CEO Perkins Miller said: “We are delighted to add these powerful and authoritative brands to the Fandom platform, which will expand our business capabilities and provide new opportunities for our partners, advertisers and Fans provide immersive content. The trusted insights, ratings and content they provide will make us a one-stop shop for fans on their entertainment and gaming journeys.”
GameSpot, Giant Bomb, and MetaCritic were acquired by Red Ventures in 2020, when the company acquired CNET Media Group. They will now be merged into the Fandom platform along with TV Guide, GameFAQ, Comic Vine and Cord Cutters News.
