Rumors about a Final Fantasy 9 remake continue to circulate. Final Fantasy 14 Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida said one thing is certain: He won’t succeed.
Back in March, it was revealed that some Final Fantasy IX themed items would be coming to Final Fantasy 14 alongside the MMO’s latest expansion pack, Dawntrail. He did not reveal why Final Fantasy IX items were appearing in the game at all, only saying that the reasoning behind it was a secret. Since it’s not E3 season right now, there’s certainly been more talk about Final Fantasy IX remake rumors, but Square Enix has yet to announce anything. However, in a recent Final Fantasy 14 producer letter, Yoshi-P flatly denied his involvement in the project and stated that he knew nothing about it.
It’s important to note that this isn’t saying he has the game – he’s just saying he won’t be making it. To be clear, the reason he’s responding to this rumor is because of fan comments saying they don’t want him to handle the game because he might change the game’s combat to real-time action instead of turn-based. However, even if he’s not working on it, he’s said “If we remake FF9, people will complain that we’re going to make it an action game! But I’m going to make it turn-based,” so at least you don’t have to worry about Yoshi-P suddenly remaking it for some reason.

If there is a Final Fantasy 9 remake, I’m sure Square Enix will eventually announce it… In the meantime, Final Fantasy 14’s latest expansion, Dawntrail, is on its way, finally launching on July 2, just a few weeks from now. Don’t worry, Yoshi-P promises that it’s “almost impossible” for the expansion to release in the same way Endwalker’s server woes did.
