Many of the music streaming services do not offer a free subscription. However, you can still use some providers for free, including Apple Music.
The streaming market leader in the music sector, Spotify, is one of the few providers to offer a free subscription that offers a lot. Apple Music, on the other hand, does not offer a free subscription, only premium packages. However, you can still use the provider for free for a while. We’ll show you how it works and what you need to pay attention to.

Apple Music offers these subscription options
If you’re looking for a free music streaming subscription, you usually won’t find it with Apple Music. The American provider has a total of three different subscription options in its repertoire, all of which are chargeable:
- Apple Music for individuals (10.99 dollars per month)
- Apple Music for families (16.99 dollars per month)
- Apple Music for students (5.99 dollars per month)
All subscriptions are equivalent in terms of features and offer the typical advantages such as listening to music without commercial interruptions or lossless audio quality. However, in certain cases you can also use these features free of charge for some time.
Listen to Apple Music for free: is it possible?
Let me say in advance: Yes, you can also listen to Apple Music for free. But this is linked to a certain condition. As a new customer, you usually receive a free trial subscription of one month. There are even three months free if you book via an Apple device and have not yet subscribed to Apple Music (as of September 2024).
During the three-month trial period you get all the features that you would otherwise have to pay for. These include, among others:
- 100 million songs & 30,000 curated playlists
- exclusive Apple content and live formats
- Stream music without ads
- Audio content downloads and offline functionality
- Lossless audio quality up to 24-bit at 192 kHz (kilohertz)
- 3D audio with Dolby Atmos
To take advantage of the trial period, you must download the Apple Music app via an Apple device, register and specify a payment option. An Apple device can be, for example, an iPhone or iPad.
You must specify the payment option so that Apple Music can collect payment for your subscription after the trial subscription expires. You can pay with common payment options such as Apple Pay, PayPal or most cred it and debit cards.
If you want to avoid a paid extension of your subscription, you must cancel your Apple Music subscription in good time. It is important that you observe the notice period and end the subscription at least 24 hours before the end of the trial period.
Is it worth paying for Apple Music afterwards?
After your Apple Music free trial, you’ll need to pay for the service. Whether this is worth it for you certainly varies from person to person. Basically, the music streaming service does not have to hide from the competition. With the good sound quality, the clear layout and the large selection of music, you’ll definitely get your money’s worth.
If you already use Apple products or other apps, Apple Music is a good choice for you. Moving completely within the Apple ecosystem also has its advantages with Apple Music, for example the synchronization of playlists with other devices such as iPad and Mac.
Is Apple Music planning a permanently free version?
While we can’t look into the future, we can look at other Apple services and consider whether Apple Music could ever introduce a free version. This is a question of company ideology: Other products such as Apple TV+ or Apple Arcade are also only available for a fee, so it is unlikely that Apple Music will ever introduce a permanently free version.
