Sony could step up its gaming efforts in the mobile space and take on Xbox Cloud Gaming, for example. At least the company has now patented a fresh controller for mobile devices.
Does Sony want to step into the mobile area via cloud gaming and enable PlayStation blockbusters via streaming on devices such as smartphones? Such direct competition with Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming could be possible thanks to a new controller.
Sony has now patented a fresh PlayStation-style controller for use with smartphones. A corresponding entry was recently made by Sony Interactive Entertainment in Japan. You can also see a concept image that divides a DualShock into two halves, which can then be attached to the left and right of the smartphone.
All in all, the whole thing would look like a portable console, with the smartphone serving as a screen in the middle. At the same time, the controller add-ons would make classic PlayStation control concepts possible while on the move.
The design is explicitly more DualShock than DualSense-looking and has a stick each on the left and right, a classic control pad on the right and the usual four PlayStation buttons X, circle, square and triangle on the right. Shoulder buttons would also be represented, whereas it remains to be seen whether there are also buttons on the back.
It remains to be seen whether the patented concept will actually be implemented in this form. This also applies to the specific plans of how Sony might want to bring PlayStation titles to mobile devices. The logical option would certainly be to expand the PlayStation Now cloud gaming offering. We will keep you up to date!
