Terrible news has reached the Bayonetta license in the last few hours. When PlatinumGames makes the decision to release new games, nothing will be the same as before.
The Bayonetta trilogy is the worthy successor to the Devil May Cry license and this is very easy to explain. This franchise was born thanks to Hideki Kamiya, father of the first two episodes of DmC. We immediately understand better the many similarities between the two series. After an acclaimed debut, the Bayo franchise was rescued by Nintendo. The Japanese manufacturer has in fact supported it by financing sequels and the same prequel.
For Bayonetta, a page turns forever
Will there be new Bayonetta games? Game Director Hideki Kamiya was not against it. “Personally, I can’t imagine the Bayonetta series ever ending. I want to do a fourth and a fifth and plan to pitch them to the company. We often talk internally about how we could remake it.” said the creator in December 2022. Words that may remain just words, because Hideki Kamiya has since left PlatinumGames. It is now up to the studio to decide on the future of the license. If there can ever be one after Bayonetta 3 and the prequel Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon
Since that statement, PlatinumGames hasn’t announced anything, but sad news for fans and the beloved license has just dropped. The actress who voiced the witch until Bayonetta 3, Atsuko Tanaka, died on August 20, 2024 from an illness that her relatives did not disclose. “I would like to express my gratitude on behalf of the fans who loved Atsuko Tanaka and the people in the video game industry who cared for her throughout her life.”
« We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of Atsuko Tanaka, who was the Japanese voice of the main character in the Bayonetta series. We sincerely thank her for bringing the character of Bayonetta to life and extend our deepest condolences to her loved ones during this difficult time. ». RIP to the incarnation of an important video game character.
