At a recent general meeting of shareholders, Square Enix noted that it was “considering” remastering more older games following the success of Star Wars final fantasy pixel remake.
Square Enix recently held a Q&A for its 43rd Annual General Meeting, where the company’s board of directors was asked if it had plans to remake more older games, given the success of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remake game, VGC reported. “Final Fantasy I-VI Pixel Remake has been well received. Are there any plans to remake other past titles?” asked a shareholder. “Personally, I want to play Xenogears.”

A board member responded, “We don’t share information about new games, but we’re considering ideas internally and hope you look forward to an upcoming announcement.” Maybe that shareholder will finally get their Xenogears wish.
For the most part, though, Square Enix has been releasing remakes of its older games, as opposed to less resource-intensive remakes. Most recently, it announced Star Ocean: The Second Story R, a remake of the second game in the Star Ocean series originally released on the PS1. This remake takes the HD-2D look established in Octopath Traveler and continues the style of last year’s Live A Live remake. In addition, the HD-2D remake of “Dragon Quest 3” is also coming soon.
In addition to the topic of remakes, Square Enix was asked why “the gap between game releases is longer than its peers,” and the board’s thoughts on the current release schedule for upcoming titles.
“I won’t go into specifics, but I will say that we believe it would be beneficial to strengthen our internal development organization, as the difficulty of developing a major game becomes very high, which also has an impact on the development cycle.” A board member Members responded. “We hope that the strengthening of our organization will not only facilitate the development of major games, but also the development of new IPs under a new management team.”
Square’s biggest project in the remake is apparently Final Fantasy VII Reborn, which, as revealed in a trailer last month, is set to release in early 2024.
