The twisted metal series, which will consist of ten 30-minute episodes of the first season, is produced by duo Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool, zombie land) and showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith (Cobra Kai). During an interview, Carter Swan, executive producer at PlayStation Studios, said that the teams would respect the lore of this universe. Got a black humor? Normally yes.
“Our showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith, one of the great writers on Cobra Kai, was a huge fan of the game and wanted it to be fun even in dark times. […] The game is just so much fun and crazy so we’re trying to capture that as best as we can. […] Zombieland is a good barometer of what we can do. Her thing is that you can have fun even in the most total apocalypse. They are able to make these violent and ridiculous things funny.”.
The first excerpt clearly shows this alternation between the menacing tone of Sweet Tooth wanting to fight John Doe (Anthony Mackie) and swinging him in all directions, and the much more second tone in which the two characters begin in total confrontation, Sing “Thong Song” by Sisqo.
Scream, Spider-Man, Captain America… in the casting
As with The Last of Us series, PlayStation didn’t do things by halves when it came to the cast. Anthony Mackie, seen in Captain America, plays John Doe. A former Blackfield Asylum patient who is about to enter a major tournament pitting violent pilots against each other.
Anthony Mackie and Neve Campbell will also cross paths. The Star of Scream, studio 54 or sex crimes. The actress will be Raven, a character from the PlayStation 2 game Turned Metal Black. In the app, she gets harassed by her classmates and wears a very somber look. Hence the nickname “raven” or “crow” in French. Thomas Church (the Sandman in Spider-Man 3) will play Agent Stone. A patrolman “Sweet speaker, cold and unyielding”, who will ensure law and order in the disunited states of America with an iron fist. His vocation? “Punish the smallest crimes with the harshest sentences”.
Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) was recruited as Quiet. A car thief “Tough and impulsive”. Between revenge and unlikely friendship with John Doe, Quiet seeks his place among the rest. Will Arnett (LEGO Batman the Movie, BoJack Horseman…) will be the voice of Sweet Tooth, but for the body it will be wrestler Samoa Joe. A PlayStation icon for older gamers.
