Three reasons why Nintendo could present the console in the next four weeks – and what we think about it

One question has been bothering Nintendo fans for months now: When will the company finally present its next console? There are three good reasons why this could happen in as little as a month.

Reason 1: Switch 2 announcement in 4 weeks according to Insider

Nate the Hate is a popular English-speaking podcaster. In the current episode, the host hosts John Linneman, long-time editor of Eurogamer and Digital Foundry. Together the two talk about Nintendo Switch 2.

Minute 22 is about an announcement period for the console, which the expert estimates for the beginning of March. According to Linneman, an announcement from Nintendo during this time would be a good opportunity to get the ball rolling for the Switch 2.

Linneman’s reasoning: He thinks it is very likely that Nintendo wants to show the console before the Game Developers Conference 2024, which will take place in San Francisco from March 18th to 22nd.

Reason 2: Possible Nintendo Direct next week

Also mentioned in the podcast is a Nintendo Direct next week, the colleagues from GamePro consider a date from February 12th to 15th to be likely. The rumor about a potential live stream has been floating around the internet for days and has made fans nervous because they might have information about the next console.

The insider throws this hope into the wind. He’s tipping on a direct with a focus on third-party titles for the still going strong Nintendo Switch.

Reason 3: Nintendo’s quarterly figures

On February 7th, Nintendo has its Quarterly results published for the period until March 31, 2024. They’re loud Tweak Town quite impressive.

According to Bloomberg Japan, Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa stated that the Switch will have sold more than 139 million units worldwide by the end of 2023.

What wasn’t mentioned: a successor to the Switch. Nintendo is also tight-lipped about this in its quarterly results.

We expect the next quarterly results in May, there may be news then.

Since its release seven years ago, the Nintendo Switch has sold 139 million copies, making it the third best-selling console of all time. It has become more than the hybrid console Nintendo DS with 154 million units sold.

Number 1 among the best-selling consoles Sonys PlayStation 2. According to its own information, 155 million consoles were sold here by the end of 2012.

The Nintendo Switch could break the PS2’s record in the coming years as the console will continue to sell.

This is what the expert says: I think an announcement about the Nintendo Switch 2 in March is conceivable. I find the insider’s reasoning to be quite convincing. Of course it remains speculation. This statement is much more interesting in connection with Nintendo’s quarterly figures, which are due in May.

If the manufacturer really does release a Switch 2 this year, then it will have to be addressed by then at the latest. And Nintendo will certainly not miss the opportunity to make a hearty announcement and not just let it run peripherally in a dry sales call.

Without any firm statements from Nintendo itself, this remains just speculation. The argument against all of this would still be that the manufacturer can do whatever he wants, no matter how much we speculate.
