Echtra Games recently made people sit up and take notice with the Diablo competitor Torchlight III. This is precisely why a current report is now causing a stir.
After three successful Torchlight parts, the Action RPG series – should it be continued again – will now be launched under a new flag. It has now become known that developer Echtra Games has been bought up by the industry giant Zynga.
Echtra Games consists mainly of former employees of Runic Games who developed Torchlight and Torchlight II. The studio originally founded by Max Schaefer has created a quite respectable competitor to Diablo with the franchise. It’s no wonder, after all, Schaefer himself was involved in the work of the blockbusters Diablo and Diablo II.
Zynga CEO Frank Gibeau is delighted that the transaction has been successful: “Max and his team at Echtra Games are responsible for some of the most legendary game brands of all time, and they are experts in the action-RPG genre and cross-platform -Development. The purchase will therefore be significant in the growth of our iconic licenses and brands from mobile to PC and consoles, and also expand the market for Zynga.
No further background to the deal was revealed, apart from the fact that Echtra Games is to work with Zynga’s studio NaturalMotion on a previously unannounced role-playing game with cross-platform play.
